Crazy military style
« on: March 04, 2008, 01:24:35 PM »
Hey guys.

I was talking with a guy in the gym im doing placement in. He wsa telling me about this military style pyramid work (it was posted here not to long ago), i said id heard of it, and told me...not in the way his training partner used to do it.

The guy was a powerlifter for the main part, but every so often switched it up for few months ans trained like this:

One xcercise grouping was Incline Bench,BB Row, Squat
It was a pyramid from 1 to 6 then back down again. So he did 1 rep of incline, then 2 reps BB rows, then 3 reps squat....then straight after with no rest..2 reps incline 4 reps BB row, 6 reps squat.  He kept going until he was doing 6 reps on incline, 12 on BB row and 18 on squat. Then back down.
Imagine squatting say 225 (example weight), 3 times then 6 times then 9 ..all the way up to 18 then back down.

He also did pyramid grouping of shoulder press....dips and BB curl.

DId it for 2 weeks then switched it so squats was 1st (so he'd only do a max of 6 at top of the pyramid, so he'd use a heavier weight) for 2 weeks, then did 2 weeks with BB rows 1st.

Sound nuts, he said it wsa also v tiring on the hole body, and the guy was totally done afterwards.

I was interested b/c iv been doing something similar with a client im training. We just started doing a pyramid up to 6 and back down....start with 1 press up,2 Db rows,3 DB squats...then 2 press ups,4 Db rows and 6 Db squats etc.
AND 1 DB shoulder press sitting on swiss ball,2 tri extensions,3 Db curls etc etc.

Thought id share.

I havnt seent he guy who does it, just his old trianing partner.
I was informed the crazy man was a powerlifter, and this was his alternative training method.
no he took the principle from a military type workout, and adapted it to work in gym with regular weights instead of just body weight excercises.

Military guys will do this with dips, pushups, situps and pullups.  It is generally said that if you can pyramid pullups from 1-10 and back down to 1 that you could do 20 strict dead hang pullups.  It is a fun workout.

Kul, id read something about it before, sounded good.

But can u imagine using it with weights ud normally use for straight sets in the gym (of course if u started something like this ud have to drop the weights down to begin with). It would be nuts on the cardiovascular system aswell.

Example pyramid (made upo weights):
1 rep 80Kg's incline press....2 reps 90Kg's Bb row....3 reps100Kg's squat
2 reps 80Kg's incline press....4 reps 90Kg's Bb row....6 reps100Kg's squat
3 reps 80Kg's incline press....6 reps 90Kg's Bb row....9 reps100Kg's squat
4 reps 80Kg's incline press....8 reps 90Kg's Bb row....12 reps100Kg's squat
5 reps 80Kg's incline press....10 reps 90Kg's Bb row....15 reps100Kg's squat
6 reps 80Kg's incline press....12 reps 90Kg's Bb row....18 reps100Kg's squat
5 reps 80Kg's incline press....10 reps 90Kg's Bb row....15 reps100Kg's squat
4 reps 80Kg's incline press....8 reps 90Kg's Bb row....12 reps100Kg's squat
3 reps 80Kg's incline press....6 reps 90Kg's Bb row....9 reps100Kg's squat
2 reps 80Kg's incline press....4 reps 90Kg's Bb row....6 reps100Kg's squat
1 rep 80Kg's incline press....2 reps 90Kg's Bb row....3 reps100Kg's squat
Hahaha ouchie?!

Did same type thing with Db shoulder press, tri extensions, and db curl.
Also switched up the order (e.g. squats 1st-using heavier weight) every couple weeks.

Suppose it would work with any excercises.

I dont know bro, i dont do it, but i like hearing about other forms of training.

Its an overload on aerobic and anearobic capacities.

I learned that as soon as the guy could complete the pyramid up and down, and complete each set, he upped the weight next time.

V intense.
