The V8 wouldn't fit, correct?

They could have designed it around any engine they wanted to, but their strongest motor at the time was a 250hp V-8. Would have been a wash with the added weight. Some people have done V-8 conversions, even a Toyota 2JZ. Those must scream..

There was also an official SEMA concept in 1999 called the Howler which had a V8 and also featured bigger trunk space (what many owners had requested).

Plymouth wanted to follow a hot rod mentality for the Prowler ("raiding the parts bin") but at the time they tried to source engine and transaxle from the truck division. That meant either reduced passenger space or longer wheelbase and messed up weight distribution.

The Titan 2JZ is an amazing piece of work, they even modified the front suspension to an inboard design.
