I always thought this was pretty much an ideal physique.

Zane used to talk about how much he trained abs directly, but I wasn't a fan of how his obliques looked later on. This is one reason why I prefer his early '70s look better. His waist looked tighter and his taper was a bit more dramatic.

I don't think he looked like shit, just don't think he was really as aesthetic as people claim. I admit that's subjective and the opposite is conventional wisdom, so was prepared for most to disagree. I think every bodybuilder has some great pics out there, but when it comes to what he looked like the majority of the time, he didn't really stand out as more aesthetic than his peers.

A lot of these shots are contest day shots. I don't look at these shots and think his competition is blown out of the water by his shape and balance. He just looks small compared to them. I honestly don't think his physique would stand out in an average gym with some  dedicated lifters.

That is a big no but I also will say that the combo of his facial structure (good looking fellow) plus the body to match helps as well. Like with Steve Reeves.

He looks a lot like Dustin Hoffman from the neck up.

Every gym I've ever belonged tot has had at least a few guys with either better shape or more mass.
In the contest pics, he's not even killing them with perfect abs.

I think he went with the 'greek ideal'the david statue as a canvas for his look..

I get that and I understand that he was probably celebrated as a reaction to the mass realization that professional bodybuilding was synonymous with drug use. My thing is that looking at his physique, it's not really what people say it is. For me, his shape and balance didn't make up for his lack of size. He can look great in individual studio shots, but when he is photographed with others, there is nothing about him that superior to other competitors.

fair enough.robbie robinson got robbed during that time ,his wins 77-79 brought incredible condition never seen and artful posing that at the time was a change.i like his build due to the classic ideal he achieved.
