College should NOT be free. There has to be a barrier to entry for all fields otherwise it dilutes the worth of said degree. Look at all the European countries with thousands of unemployed over educated college grads.

in your example, we shouldn't give free health care because last year someone paid for so and so procedure.  You have to start some place, and there will be a few people that won't be able to maximize it such as in the example you gave.

If you score well on standardized test you have more options.

Univeristy of Illinois was very hard to get into (at least for a white male) and i had to score well on the ACT (28 or higher) but the tuition was only $5k per semester (back in 1998)

My dumb friends who bombed the ACT. Were forced to go out-of-state and pay ridiculous tuition.

My point is that you should reward the students who deserve it.  If they try hard, get good grades and score well on tests then they should pay much for school.  Everyone else should have to either pay full price or do extra work to try and qualify for grants, etc

Yep, because college degrees in philosophy are a great stepping stone at starting new businesses.  Maybe instead of wasting money on college the gov can give out free courses on starting your own business, how to apply for gov. grant and loans and not get taxed too heavy so they can survive in the first few years.

All free college will do is saturate a market that doesn't have enough jobs to serve them.  So you'll end up having college degree Uber Drivers, Starbucks Baristas and Hookers.

No, You can't start a business as an architect, doctor, lawyer, dentist, etc. Without a degree. While a degree is not necessary in every field, it helps significantly. If not a 4 year degree then a 2 year degree of trade.

This is a fallacy and I've heard Sanders saying the same.

There is a finite numbers of jobs for people with college degrees, also resources are limited.
For instance, if a country has 1 million civil engineers, and some years later that number increases up to 5 million, it doesn't mean the country is building 5 times as much as before.

An oversupply in civil engineers would only lead to lower wages, and a bigger unemployement rate in that field. Of course, as soon as younger people notice it's not a good idea to become one, then supply would lower and wages would go up again.

For instance, if we have 5x as many engineers as we need then engineer pay goes down and then prospective engineers see this and pick another major. However, currently, colleges benefit from deceiving students into going into bad programs

I will agree with you here!

My fiancé is on path to becoming an Occupational Therapist, and her advisor convinced (more like "forced") her to major in kinesiology. That is fine and all, but she could have gotten all of the prerequisite course material in any of the science majors (like BIO, CHEM, PHYS, Etc.).

If she does not get accepted into her OT program after graduation, there are not many jobs that a bachelor's in Kinesiology can obtain on its own (compared to a BA in Bio, Chem, Physics, etc.).

But seriously,  A good college will help you find a job or internship.
A lot of college graduates don't want to work for it, experience is very important.
They think a degree is the end all be all, it isn't, it is just the beginning.

The material at a college has undergone some peer process and is delivered in an organized manner. Also, they're supposedly teaching people to understand information.

The internet has blurred the line between information and knowledge. It's easier for people to feel validated about being ignorant or reinforce any crazy notion (i.e., Reptilians, Original Hebrews, Aliens, Egyptian gene splicing, etc...) because there are a ton of other dumbfucks believing the same stupid shit.

Even if someone's educated, a great deal of information is of limited value if they may not have the foundation to understanding or its application. That simple fact doesn't stop people with a lot of formal education from believing they have a valid opinion on every topic or overestimating their capabilities in other areas.
