in your example, we shouldn't give free health care because last year someone paid for so and so procedure.  You have to start some place, and there will be a few people that won't be able to maximize it such as in the example you gave.

I'm still paying loans and I wouldn't care about it being free. I don't think it should be free though.
You will end up with shitty free colleges and $$$ private colleges.

However, a cheap state ran distance learning programs for all citizens would be a great idea. And make the classes more like in India where they focus more on the career you want to do, and remove a lot of the BS easy A courses.
Give everyone the option to get skills and knowledge.

That R&D money comes in forms of grants.  Think about the billions raised from charities to find cancer, aids , heart disease and other cures.  That money is then divied up to these R&D departments of Universities and Big pharma to find a cure, then they find a cure and make billions off of it.

Yep, because college degrees in philosophy are a great stepping stone at starting new businesses.  Maybe instead of wasting money on college the gov can give out free courses on starting your own business, how to apply for gov. grant and loans and not get taxed too heavy so they can survive in the first few years.

All free college will do is saturate a market that doesn't have enough jobs to serve them.  So you'll end up having college degree Uber Drivers, Starbucks Baristas and Hookers.

You're leaving off technology. I'd hire 5 qualified developers and lead architects next week if I could find them, to support the amount of big projects we have.

This is a fallacy and I've heard Sanders saying the same.

There is a finite numbers of jobs for people with college degrees, also resources are limited.
For instance, if a country has 1 million civil engineers, and some years later that number increases up to 5 million, it doesn't mean the country is building 5 times as much as before.

An oversupply in civil engineers would only lead to lower wages, and a bigger unemployement rate in that field. Of course, as soon as younger people notice it's not a good idea to become one, then supply would lower and wages would go up again.

Education thread!  Time for me to dust off the 'ol shoulder chip.  

Lets be honest.  College in the US is basically 4 more years of high school except with more beer and unshackled vaginas.  Both very worthwhile things, although unrelated to any ostensible book larnin aspirations.

I guess these places should continue to exist, what with their hallowed pedigree of being suppositories of knowledge, bacons of illumination, etc.  No them apples, but name one piece of information held in reserve by a college that you couldn't have uncovered at the library.  

"Peer discussion."  That's true.  You may have met these peers.  You might even be one.  "Lab."  Which would be technical schooling, with a practical view to employment in that field, as in: vocational learning.  Worker training to create an efficient, obedient, process adhering, third party stamped and approved cog on a sesame seed bun.  As distinct from actual education, the long forgotten and gone purpose of which is to edify the individual for his own sake, not that of his bank balance, or his employer, or his employer's bank balance.  I love seeing advice to 'get an education' so that someone can 'make big money.'  It's deliciously vulgar.

I submit that our more astuter degreed members, far more astutied than I, were that way in the first place and took an effort in/improvement out approach to their schooling, which makes them a result of their own efforts, not a product minted by an institution.  Others didn't take such an approach but I'm sure they had a good time anyway.  So should years 13-16 of high school and lab coat shop class be free?  The correct answer is: What the fuck's the difference.

College is a scam and a racket.  Any college getting any federal funds should be required to offer an objective multiple choice test in any subject that if you pass you get the degree, no questions asked.  If some kid, rich or poor or black or white comes in and passes then that is that.  Place all the emphasis on actual learning.  A huge amount of time in college is spent fiddle farting around because it isn't about learning.  It is about lining various pockets.
