What exactly is the proper way to do deadlifts?

Would a bodybuilder and powerlifter perform them the same way?

What is a Romanian deadlift?

I heard a lot of professional athletes don't do them anymore because it's too easy to fuck up your back.  Is this true and what do they substitute for them?

Any help is appreciated.

Proper deads will only strengthen your back. Problem is, many go too heavy, use improper form, train too frequently and let their egos get in the way - which leads to injury.

I would agree with Freak, Deads are a good lift and safe as any other, just don't try and act too big......
