too many sets??
« on: April 05, 2006, 05:36:10 PM »
 hey guys
I've been doing 12 total working sets now.. i was thinking of going up up sets to 16-20 for big muscle and 12- 15 for the smaller ones. this how how my workout would look

mon chest 16-20 sets/ bis 12-14
tus legs  quads 12 set / hams 6/ calves 6-9
thur back 20sets /traps 6sets/abs 6sets
fri shoulders 12-14/ tris 12sets

what do you guys think about this??   if you'll notice i dont train legs with alot of sets. mainly because its working a little to well. where my lower body is out of balance with my upper body.. i've throught about lowering leg training but i love my squats and leg press. I also train very intense and im in and out the gym in 45-60 minutes.

Has it occured to you by working legs with less sets than the upper body, maybe that's the prime reason that's it's working "too well" and your legs seem out of muscular balance.  One day a week for the legs and three day for the upper body should give some clue that you might be overworking the upper body by not allowing enought recovery time. Of course having a single workout day for the shoulders may not be the best idea in the world either. May want to readjust the weekly split a bit, adding more sets is usually not the answer for lagging body parts. Personal view is that your doing ways too many sets for all the exercises per muscle groups anyway, including legs. Good Luck.

I can't do a three day split. i can barely still with a four day..i dont have a  bad upper body. but  i keep reading that lagging bodyparts should get more blood volume?? is this true?? I've always have, had legs that reponsed will. so i keep the workout the smame until  my legs get smaller and stop gowing..

I could never do a three day split either. it kills me to stay with the four day a week. i hate rest days but rest days are good

If you are natural, you need days of rest and don't need to do endless sets and make sure you eat plenty to keep up with your training.  I used to do train endlessly seven days a week and didn't see great gains.  When I cut back to five days with reasonable volume, I started to notice strength and size gains.  Everyone is different but ask any pro and they will tell you how important rest is and it seems like alot of them are bums (in the sense that they rest alot).

They also never change... hmm I wonder why?!

I think 12 to 14 sets for biceps is way overkill. 20 sets for chest? man, many  pro's don't do that much work. 26 Sets for back if you include traps? Again overkill. Your natural correct? You could and probably should cut your upper body training volume at least in half.

Only thing I do 20 sets on is legs to blast the s**t out of them.

Chest I'm at around 10
Arms around 10 sets
Back and shoulders around 12-15 just because of all the different angles.

You hit failure 75% of the time on 10-12 sets IMO you won't have anythig left, especailly if your working out more than one bodypart a day.

I agree too many sets.  Are you using ligher weight?  Legs i can do more sets but heavy sets then some burn out sets at the end.  Upper body you could be overtraining.
