The earlier you start training, the better (for musclememory).

You need to be able to do the moves without thinking.

If i should grab the sticks these days , i would pause and think too much since i've forgotten so much

I was never any good though, i was more into unarmed styles, but sure, i could still defend myself from an attacker if i had the sticks in my hands.

I can do some stuff and the movements are somewhat fluid, but i've forgotten most of the disarming techs and such.

Trained some with the Balisong-knife too but it wasn't really my cup of tea either. We can't walk around with knives here in Sweden either so i focused on the Unarmed styles.

Loved Tae Kwon Do back then though, and even though i haven't trained any MA for 16+ years and have been through some injuries with very stiff joints and ligaments, i could still pull off a mean spinning kick even at my advanced age!


I actually did try to do one of my favorite moves (i was more flash than substance back in the 80s and early 90s) last year (kicking high up in the air and then freezing the leg in position for as long as possible) without warming (läl) up but only thing i managed to do was to sprain my groin-area lol

I like the knife stuff more than the stick fighting.  I trained a lot in martial arts but almost all hand to hand and not weapons.  They have the best weapons fighting in the world.

If you like Knife fighting you should also look into Krav Maga beside Kali.

As for the thread, when I was lucky enough to run my own gym in the mid '90s I preferred to take free lessons from instructors rather than charge them for room hire.  As a result, I was able to request personalised training.  Our Aikido master was a cruel SOB but I coped (just about).  I asked to just be taught blocks and locks, as I figured they would be most useful for door work.  I can still remember the first time that f**ker rolled me over as I tried to avoid a broken wrist - agony!!!!

Yes, he's one of the precious few who doesn't talk shit about anybody and is universally liked. His father is from Hawaii and the "Reeves" name is a big family in Hawaii. Guys that I know who have trained with him say you would never know he was a movie star. No pretense or sense of entitlement. One said he didn't even know it was Keanu until after someone told him

Kwon - I feel you.  The best (and most useful) one I ever got taught was the handshake reversal (with overgrip) - I'm sure you know what I mean (and it has a proper name!)...

A very beautiful woman I knew decades ago became a police officer and she decided to show me a wrist lock thingy that she said would allow her to "control a big moron" (like me) with ease.

She was gorgeous and I had a crush on her and all  her sisters...I digress.  Well, she did the wrist hold and I was paralyzed with agonizing pain!  She walked me around their driveway like a love struck puppy, LOL!  I asked her repeatedly to please let me go but she just kept it up for what seemed an eternity.  And then she walked me back toward the garage door.  It was closed and I saw my chance.  I slammed her against the door hard enough that she was shook silly and let go of me. 

I did not harm her but she was shocked.  I told her that wrist hold was great and that she need not worry about it holding a normal big moron, LOL!  She apologized for overdoing it and I did the same for slamming her into the door.  She was gorgeous.,  Her younger sister was even more so. If that is possible.  Decades have passed...Time waits for no moron.

If you want to have any chance to survive a knife attack you have to train in a weapons system.
No other way.  you need to understand how to use it to have any chance of defence.
