That's complete bullshit. Speedskaters put in hours of cardio and they sure as hell don't have small legs, lol. Or track cyclists like Robert Forstermann. Talk about clueless gym rats...

are you comparing speed skaters and track cyclist to marathon runners? Or soccer players?   ::)

Science proves that cardio is counter productive to keeping and maintaining muscle mass. Doesn't mean that you'll lose a ton of muscle if you add cardio to your fitnes program, but it's not helping in building more muscle. Simple. There's no use for cardio in human health.

Grandpa was a farmer who walked hours everyday ( that's cardio ) and now he is 95yo and still feeling good. Running and walking does help you stay in a good shape so does eating balanced meals.

Bodybuilders do not do that much cardio. none that i know of try and run marathons. It´s used mainly at the end of contest prep to get in really ripped shape.
you will not lose tons of muscle walking or cycling for fitness. utter rubbish. Cardio is important.

While you don’t need to have an aerobic base, I believe most athletically inclined people would rather be able to run a few miles than not.

My great-grandparents lived until their late 90's too.

Cotton farmers.

It's more about just being active then cardio IMO.

Plus they ate fried food and drank coffee all day, every day. Didn't even understand what healthy food was. They just cooked what they had available at the local market.

At 94 years old my great-grandfather used to throw 50 pound hay bails into the back of a truck like they were pillows.

My father is almost 70 and can snow ski for 8 hours no problem. Hikes all day at a pace that i can barely keep up with. Doesn't go to the gym, just stays active every day. He's perfectly healthy.

If regular cardio can enlarge the heart, and obviously steroids can enlarge the heart, then surely the last thing these retard bodybuilders should do is cardio?

enlarge and thicken arent the same thing

The same here, he is drinking coffee the whole day and put in all the sugar he wants. I guess moving around, doing manual labor and walking is what made them healthy.
To me cardio is necessary, I don't care if I'm going to lose muscle or weight. When I walk or run during a period of time, I feel a way better than when I'm not doing it. I used to have muscle and felt useless as I couldn't run 15min without stopping

Living in harmony with how humans have evolved will yield the longest life. That is being very active often on what food you can get.

There is a quote from Arnold about training or over-training...something about humans being made to walk 30 miles a day or similar. I believe that. If we weren't so distracted by money and technology we would have fitter bodies and minds.

With so many people these days working sedentary jobs, some cardio and of course weights is probably not a bad idea.

Yeah i think the key is to stay active and try to eat as healthy as possible without making it too challenging, just stay away from bad foods. Also the food my G-grandparents ate was pretty organic, they didn't have processed food in that part of the state, or at least very little of it. Most of the meat they ate was from the farm just a few miles down the road. Lots of fresh veggies and fruits.

I do believe we are meant to work manually more than mentally. That's why i always try to do something physical every day. Sitting at a desk in front of a computer for 9-10 hours a day is terrible for you.

When the weather is nice here in NM, a lot of people ride bikes to work. It's only a 5 miles ride for me and i don't have to dress formal, so as long as it's not too hot/cold i've been trying to ride my mountain bike to work a few days a week.

I definitely agree! For the last 24 years i've had an office job. That's a lot of time sitting still doing nothing. I'm lucky that i've been working out since i was a teen so it probably hasn't effected me as much as most people.

I think everyone should exercise every single day, even if just a 30 minute walk around the block or something. Just keep your body moving.

When i workout 4-5 days a week and do cardio on the off days, i can tell i get a boost of energy. I just don't like standard cardio, so i try to go hiking or bike riding.

Most American's do not exercise at all and eat a terrible diet. It's no wonder we are so unhealthy as a Country. When i lived in Germany you didn't see any obese people. Lots of people rode bikes or walked everywhere. It was truly amazing at how few fat people you saw over there. And you never saw someone who was 300+ pounds. At least i don't remember it.

Greater food availability is a factor. Back in the 70s Walmart was still a regional company. I was just reading its history, in 1970 they only had 38 stores.

In the good old days, poor people couldn’t afford to overeat.

I used to go out at 8am and not come home until 5pm in summer school holidays, nothing to eat all day, playing football going for miles on my bike

Bowl cereal in the morning, thats if there was any milk left from the day before, we only had one pint a day between 4 of us
My tea used to be chips beans and fried eggs and 3 slices bread, and people talk about intermittent fasting like its something difficult

LOL- now it's marathon runners you are comparing everyone to. God you are a dolt. First you said cardio, now it's comparing that to guys who run 2+ hours at race pace. And BTW,  most marathoners literally starve themselves to stay lean. My cousin won the Charlotte Marathon and his diet was pretty much cereal and cookies.

Eric Heiden had some of the biggest quads I've ever seen and yet he did 100 mile races- and in fact won the USA Pro Cycling championships in Phillie one year. He also raced in the Tour de France. I'll tell him some twerp named "kreator" says you can't be big and have endurance, haha.

And just to put the final nail in your coffin, the late Johnny Fuller, a world ranked bodybuilder in the 70's and 80's, actually ran a marathon. I recall in the article I read years ago that he weighed 220 at the time...

In the good old days, poor people couldn’t afford to overeat.

That's something many people forget.

I know even my parent's generation, they almost never went out to eat. And when they did is was for hot dogs and cole slaw.

This is where the "clean your plate" generation came from. People couldn't afford to just waste food.

They also ate a lot less based on what my family has told me.

Even growing up in the 80's we only went out to eat maybe once a month and it was Dairy Queen or Burger King, ironic i know. I remember my dad brought leftovers or a sandwich and chips to work with him every single day.

Now most people go out to eat several times a week. This guy i work with goes out to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, it's unreal. Dudes a walking heart attack and his kids are fat as hell.

That's how my childhood was. Breakfast and then an entire day of bike riding. We used to ride miles at a time with no problem. Rode to school like 6 miles each way no problem.

Until i got into High School, i had never had any fat friends, a few were a little chubby, but not these walking beasts you have today.

Kids these days in the states are mainly fat kids. It's crazy. My Gf's niece is 10 and weights 150. Her mother blames it on "thyroid", when she gets fed nothing but shit food 4 times a day just like her cow of a mother.

We had just the one fat kid, and his nickname from 5 to 16 (when I never saw him again) was 'Podge'

Fat kids = child abuse

yes, my school as well, one fat kid, his family was wealthy, used to eat huge ice creams from the van outside the school at lunchtime
