Conor McGregor Working Out [The Rise and Fall].
« on: April 17, 2022, 08:27:44 PM »
Dude is delusional - has won one fight since Obama was president against a washed up fighter who has lost his six most recent fights.

Yet somehow, he still thinks he's the best.

I think the lesson here is - don't get high on the smell of your own gas.

Or maybe don't get high on masses of cocaine while drinking bottles of his own whiskey?  ???

McGregor hasn't beat any ranked fighter in ages...it's really time for him to put it all away.

I feel sad for the guy [yes...I feel sad for a guy with a $400M net worth]. But he really believes his own hype, and j don't see him beating anyone in the UFC again unless they feed him another can.

He was lucky, for the following reasons:

[1] He lost to Floyd Mayweather in 2017, but he made it to the 10th found, and he surpassed all expectations. He outperformed what people expected of him, and that's all that matters. That fight was also more exciting to the casual viewer than a professional boxing match where the two fighters do a ballroom dance for 12 rounds.

[2] Khabib Nurmagomedov's behaviour after their 2018 fight overshadowed Conor's loss. Conor was also the ONLY FIGHTER to even beat Khabib in a round - although it's debatable if he won the 3rd round, the judges scored it for Conor, so it's still on the books as a round victory for Conor.

[3] He was fed a tomato can, in the form of Cowboy Donald Cerrone, and won convincingly in 40 seconds. This refreshed his brand, and kept his market value strong.

[4] He broke his foot in the Dustin Poirier fight, which leaves the door open for a 4th fight, since it was a freak accident.

So he can still make some money - but how bad must it be for a fighter to basically be fed to other actual currently successful fighters, and be beaten over and over again, only to see his legacy turn to mush?

Incidentally, what is McGregor benching here? Whatever it is, it's not exactly light work to McGregor, judging by his form:

Life is for living, Matt. He's still young and doing what he does best - just enjoy it. All top fighters are 'deluded' to an extent. If you don't believe you can beat everyone, there's not much point in getting in there.

That's true on life [not for me], and that's true about most pros.

But isn't Conor a level ahead in terms of being unrealistic about his current status in fighting?

Do you see him beating a top six ranked fighter ever again?

Also, do you think his foot injury is one he can come back from?

Nah, I get why the consensus is that he's past it and deluded, but I don't think it's as bad as they make out. Firstly, at least he's actually reached the top of his sport before. Kumshot Chimaev and a few of these other guys are much worse with their bullshit, in my opinion.

Secondly, there's always a strong element of chance or 'luck' with MMA. If you can punch, you only have to land a bomb on some bozo's chin once. Connor has power and he's a reasonable boxer. It's unlikely he will beat any of the top guys, but I can see him still putting on a good show. I'd like to see him have one last fight with Pea Head - and that's one he could win.

One day he's going to be fifty and able to look back on all of this with contentment. After a few losses followed by a horrific leg break, he remained focused and got back in there. That's worthy of some admiration. You can come back from most things if your mind is strong enough.

I will always welcome more of this sort of thing in the world:

Has he really declined, or did he just step up his competition and weight class? He was dominant at 145lbs he won the belt at 155lbs but only beat Alvarez he didn't beat the contenders at 155. He then made the mistake of going to 170lbs to fight Diaz. He then was too stubborn to realize he wasn't a 170lber and keeps trying to fight there. After some time off for boxing he cuts back to 155 and fights Dustin a tough contender at 155lbs. Just because he lost to Khabib and Dustin and is too small for 170 doesn't mean he got any worse. He was always going to be an average contender at 155lbs.

I hope you're right for one reason:

Conor basically was the UFC before. He was responsible for bringing more money to the sport than any other fighter.

I don't know if you recall how boring 2017 was compared to 2016 without him.

He literally singlehandedly made other fighters rich. Bringing fight pay up from $60,000 to $400,000 a fight.

That's why Dana was smart to set up that fight with Cowboy.

What about the time off? Conor is 33 - NOT OLD - but if I recall correctly, the oldest lightweight champion was Sean Sherk, who won the title at 32, in 2005.

Conor has has a series of reasons to lose each fight he has lost - no one beat Khabib, so he can take an L there. That foot break was no way to end a fight. And no serious boxing fan expected Conor to beat Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match.

That covers everything but Poirier II.

But I think he needs a win now, to rejuvenate his brand.

I believe he has talked about beating Kamaru Usman, which I don't see happening.

Another win is important here though. He brings a lot of eyeballs to the UFC.

I think this is valid.

This is the thing about fighting:

Weight classes exist for a reason.

But I think the untouchable feeling Conor had was narrowly maintained in the 145-lb class.

Perhaps he should have stayed there.

That said, I don't see McGregor beating Alexander Volkanovski. Volkanovski is really good...and lighter champs tend to be younger.

That said, McGregor is only two months older than Volkanovski.

I do think McGregor should quit drinking though.
