Absolutely horrible.

Poor fuck is just pinned. Lights slowly going out.

No one can say with certainty he’d be a success freeing himself in this exact situation. We’d like to imagine ourselves capable, but, really, there’s no way to KNOW know.

Yes, he was foolish, but we all are, at times. Especially when young.

The latter leg movements, etc. are more automated neurological impulses, however futile they were.

The panic, though, in those first seconds.

What a monstrous drag.

RIP, fella.

True, I just have to say it wouldn’t happen to me cause I just can’t accept this way of death but you are correct. Must have been just brutal. Still I can’t understand the situation.

And I understand your attempt to convince yourself it wouldn’t happen to you. Believe me, I would like to think I could manage to free myself, as well, but …

This is OUR world. So it is hugely upsetting for us.

Even with the clamps, you tip it off to one side, possibly leveraging your whole body to that side and get the fuck out of there. Or you squirm back with the bar until it is on your chest and neck is safely behind the rack, and then try to sway it to one side. You never ever let it go to the neck. The guy was an idiot and had zero experience in the bench.

He pinned himself down as the bar fell back into the rack supports.

Collars or no collars he wouldn't have been able to slide or tip the bar to one side as the bar had effectively been reracked. Only way he could have got out of this is lifting the bar clean off the rack.

He seemed to last forever, clinging on for as long as possible but as mentioned he was probably already passed out as his arms weren't doing anything useful, just impulses maybe even a seizure?
I've been pinned before, rolled down the chest and ribs luckily. I had safety collars on but then i had my bench in my dads conservatory and the last thing i thought of back then was getting stuck, rather dont want weights crashing off and bar smashing through the window.

Pretty much, I don’t use a bar anymore for anything really.

I bench alone in my power-rack with perfectly set uprights. If I fail, its right at my chest.
I can then roll the bar back a bit toward my head and escape under it.

The powerlifting bench at the gym is the same, safety arms fit me perfectly.
Minor arch, I raise my chest a bit, but if I fail, I can collapse a little bit and get out...

If I am doing a PR or best-lift, I use a spotter...

If you're benching heavy weights, use a catch fellas! I think about this often. I train at odd hours with few if any people in the gym. Without safety catches it could turn deadly if I decided to push myself too much. Not fucking worth it!

I train alone in my home gym but I am in metal fabrication and I have made safety racks for benching and squatting. It keeps anything like this from happening but also if you know you could be pinned under the bar you will be reluctant to try that extra rep.Stay safe guys

Can you imagine how that felt resting freely on his throat, his head must have felt like it was going to explode, so long he had to think fuck I'm dead.

If you are alone in the gym, it's machine day.  I had an Anytime Membership.  All solo night workouts were machines, maybe dumbbells for rows, rear delts and curls

My friend told me about this. I didn't want to watch it.

Since I'm striving for a 370 bench now, to beat B. Hank's alleged best bench of 365 from 2002, I don't want to be deterred from it by internalizing any irrational views on bench press risks.

Would there be any benefit for me to watch it, with respect to that concern? Maybe to learn what not to do?

I benched 365 the same year I benched 350X2 it was 2014 when I was 37 but yeah I also pressed 365 in 2003 when I was 25. I matched my lifetime max at 37. I watched the video to see if there was something to learn and no other than don't try and make it a decline bench arching your back like an idiot as you are just creating a slide to your neck.

If you don't like the 365 as no video that is fine there is a video of 350x2 if you get 355x2 that would work. But honestly why not just focus on getting to 350 first? That is my plan once there I obviously would like to get to 365 again but I am also realistic if I can get back to 350 after my injuries at my age I would be very happy with that. Regardless what anyone else lifts

what you did in the past may as well have not happened

Why do you keep forgetting your own rule?

What's really sad is that it's 250 that killed him....
