Ha ! Navalny, a freedom fighter who openly called for the bombing/killing of civilians in another country during an armed conflict with the Russian Federation 15 years ago (among other provocations.)

I obviously cannot prove it, but I think he acted in the interests of a competing faction within the Kremlin itself. An influential group that has been trying to gain the upper hand for years. Its members probably felt unwell and collapsed suddenly - out of a window.

Weeks ago -  in december - he went totally missing for 20 consecutive days. It makes sense now - the Kremlin was floating a trial balloon about his death.

For the better part of 2021-2022, the Russian political swamp was in complete turmoil. Many wondered whether it was time to jump ships and swear allegiance to a stronger, meaner sub-faction. Guess the State has made abundantly clear as to whom managed to prevail. It's a common thing in Soviet politics.

To be frank, the only leader who truly managed to balance internal rivalries out was Comrade Brezhnev. Under his leadership, all political and military figures kept getting a proportional share of the proverbial corruption-iced cake based on their hierarchical rank within the Soviet criminal/bureaucratic administration. There was just no point in opposing him. Stalin was on a whole other level though.

I went through a phase years ago of reading the well known C19th Russian authors, and I remember the complexities of the hierarchy, the titles, the nominals, etc. so it's interesting to think that sort of thing in a modern setting

The story about the botched underwear poisoning attempt was likely true. I know people who had probably been - whithout their knowledge - in the same smoker area as the alleged GRU operatives during a conference break.

The Western and liberal Russian press presented this story as a failed assasination attempt. I disagree. "Soviet" governments have a very strong, unhealthy penchant for dark humor, bullying & humiliation.

In my opinion, MSM failed to pick on this "Novichok practical joke" :

1- Hurt Navalny just enough as to not kill him,
2- Taunt him by letting him know what happened and who did it.
3-  Allow him to fly out to Germany in order to receive proper care and treatement. 
4-  Arrest him on false charges once he returns. Lock him up in brutal isolation cells for 300+ days and wait until he dies slowly, very slowly of mistreatement whilst comically "following" imprisonement rules to a T - no formal and politically compromising torture method was thus required since the world had its eyes locked on the storyline.

The authorities formally sealed his fate in december when the decision of relocating him to one of Russia’s northernmost prisons was made - well above the Arctic circle. That fact alone meant that keeping him alive was no longer a priority.

He spent most of his time in a special area of the penal colony - a prison within a prison if you will. A place normaly designed to hold and break incarcerated individuals considered to be security risks to other inmates or staff - as well as those who violate facility rules or are deemed disruptive.

Anything could have been done to him under those conditions. Absolutely anything. However, his legal case still required regular hearings conducted via videolink. So that rules out the most extreme forms of abuse ( around the clock beatings, stress positions, anal rape with different objects etc..)

In my opinion, the easiest and cleanest way to get rid of him was to simply wait until he collapsed sooner or later due to poor health, and call the paramedics "too late." Exotic lethal tools or substances were simply not needed in such a harsh and remote environement. Extremely low temperatures are already widely used as a form of physical abuse in those places.
