Cardio
« on: May 31, 2006, 04:41:07 PM »
Is early morning cardio on a empty stomach still the best way to lose weight?  I notice pros still do that, but some people believe that doing it on an empty stomach makes no difference on the amount of fat you lose.

Well the "magic" question is will it work for you? Most of you burning of calories occurs when you are at "rest" throughout the day, meaning not training. To do cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach sounds like the best thing, however there are arguments that because you need glycogen for energy, the FIRST source is MUSCLE. Last thing you want to lose. Then there's the choice of doing after your workout, while you heart rate should already be up a little and your body warm. But again low glycogen stores could cause muscle loss.
I do mine AFTER my workout, but I have a quick shake with some simple carbs right before. Depending on my goal (weight loss or just staying fit) I will adjust intensity and duration. Usually 30 mins on Stepmill at level 6.
What ever you feel will work is really what's best because CONSISTENCY is what dictates your results.

This is true to a point but it also comes down to the intensity. If you run at say a 5 mph pace on the treadmill then YES your body will readily use my glycogen than fat stores but if you keep it at a lower intensity say 3-4 mph then you will use more fat stores than glycogen.

Look at all bodybuilders, Pro or Recreational when they do Cardio, it is always low intensity for a healthy amount of time 20-45 minutes...

I'd rather do a brisk walk on an  incline (3.5 mph @ 12-15% grade) than jog at 6-7 mph.  I'm finding that this is better in terms of shedding the fat.  Only two weeks into it & already an inch off the waist.  :D
