Yep.  That was a great call on their part.  Ran about 6 seconds off the clock.  Left us with about 4 seconds.

Man we could have won that game.  We didn't punt.  We were running those guys up and down the field the entire night.  Three or four plays decided the game.  Colt threw a strike in the endzone to our best WR (Bess) on the first drive of the game and he dropped it.  We then missed a FG.  Our best outside WR dropped a TD pass.  One of our best WRs ran the wrong route in the endzone and Colt throws it where the WR should be.  INT.  The 100 yard kick return.  Last drive of the game we were about 20 yards away from the game-winning score.  Colt short hopped a pass on 4th and long.  Oh well.  We did pretty darn well against the 4th place team in the Big Ten (Purdue) and the third place team in the PAC 10 (Oregon State).

We cleaned up on WAC honors:

Brennan, Jones take top WAC honors; 9 on 1st team

By Stephen Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Western Athletic Conference has named University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan as the Offensive Player of the Year and June Jones as the Coach of the Year.
In addition to Brennan, the other Warriors named to the All-WAC first team are: running back Nate Ilaoa, left slotback Davone Bess, left tackle Tala Esera, center Samson Satele, left defensive end Melila Purcell III, right defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis, free safety Leonard Peters and kick returner Ross Dickerson.

Left wideout Jason Rivers, right tackle Dane Uperesa, nose tackle Michael Lafaele and inside linebacker Adam Leonard were named to the second team.

"That's awesome about coach Jones," Brennan said. "He did a great job. I'm so happy for him."

Brennan, who leads the nation in total offense and touchdown passes, called his award "a great honor. It's huge. I remember during the summer when they said I was going to be the preseason Player of the Year. I said then it only matters what happens at the end of the year. I'm glad (the voters) thought I did a good job.

"But again, this isn't about me. It's about our offense. We wanted to make a statement that we weren't one of the best offenses in the nation. We wanted to win the overall title. That's why this is a good honor for the receivers, the o-line and Nate. They deserve as much credit."

Ilaoa, who is Brennan's roommate on the road, praised Brennan and the rest of the offense.

"I'm happy for everybody," Ilaoa said. "It's a good thing."

after Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin the Big Ten is a real joke, but i guess Purdue is still from the BIG TEN. i see you got Arizona State in the bowl game. Brennan should rip them apart. They've been a total mess this year since the QB controversy. You might put 60 on the board against them. Thanks to their dumbass coach though Nebraska will have Sam Kellar throwing touchdown passes in Lincoln next year.

Who is your team?

Nebraska. The Huskers are going to the Cotton Bowl. The Big XII CCG was a painful one to watch.

UH's Brennan given award for nation's top passer

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan has won the 2006 Sammy Baugh Award, the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio, and UH announced this morning.
The award has been presented to the nation's top passer since 1959. Brennan won out over last year's winner, Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn of Notre Dame.

Past winners include John Elway, Steve Young and Daunte Culpepper.

Brennan, a redshirt junior from Irvine, Calif.,is threatening to break the NCAA single-season record for touchdown passes.

Brennan is scheduled to receive the award Feb. 10, 2007 at the Touchdown Club's 52nd Annual Sports Banquet.

Forget the Texas hold 'em facade.

University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones, whose team plays Arizona State in today's Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, is downright giddy when he heard this latest gem:

"UH quarterback Colt Brennan has thrown for 284 more yards and three more touchdowns than Ohio State's Troy Smith and Michigan's Chad Henne combined ...

"... in 67 fewer passing attempts."

"That's just unbelievable," said Jones, who receives reports from a staff member scouring newspaper and Internet stories from across the country. "Just mind-numbing."

lol.   :)  Riiiight.  So you consider Alabama, UNLV, Purdue, and Oregon State WAC defenses?

We just dropped 41 points and 680 yards on the 26th ranked D in the country (ASU).  Colt passed for over 500 yards, including 5 TDs in the second half (one dropped TD pass in the first half).  All time single season TD leader with 58 (on something like 70 fewer attempts than it took Klingler).  He sat out 7 quarters this year.  All time single season passing efficiency leader.  Led the nation in yards, TDs, completion percentage, efficiency, etc.  Best offense in the country, hands down.  I think we scored more points than any team in NCAA history and are second all time in yards for a season?  My only regret is the season is over and we cannot play a few more.   :'(

A summary of our beat down of ASU:

Brennan Shatters Record With 5 Touchdown Passes In Hawaii Bowl Win

December 25, 2006 1:11 p.m. EST

Pete Flies - All Headline News Sports Reporter
Honolulu, HI (AHN) - In a slow first half, Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan threw one interception and no touchdown passes, and for 27 minutes of the Hawaii Bowl, David Klingler's record for touchdown passes appeared safe. Then at 12:29 in the third quarter, Brennan hit Jason Rivers for 38 yards and Rivers scored the first of five touchdowns directed by Brennan. Left in the dust was the old record of 54 single-season touchdown passes as Brennan's number climbed to 58. The Warriors dumped the Arizona State Sun Devils 41-24.

The recent record holder for single-season touchdown passes, David Klingler of the University of Houston, once burned cornerbacks for 11 touchdowns in one game against Eastern Washington University. The most Brennan passed for in a single game was six, but Brennan never had less than two in a game, making him consistent throughout the entire season.

Hawaii's Brennan, who had bigger numbers than either Brady Quinn or Troy Smith, had untouchable numbers in every category. He ended the season leading all quarterbacks by wide margins in rating (185.96), most passing yards (5,549), and most touchdowns (58).

There are more stats, too: Brennan had the highest completion rate in college football (72.6 percent), and he led the nation's most powerful offense. The Warriors gain 560 yards a game in the regular season and racked up 680 against ASU. That's 75 more yards per outing than the No. 2 ranked Louisville offense. Of those 560 yards per game, 432.2 came from Brennan's passing, which is also No. 1 in the NCAA.

More amazing yet is that Brennan is only a junior, meaning his unjust absence from the Heisman voting ballot in 2006 can still be rectified, provided he puts up another season of vast numbers. As of the Christmas Eve day win, Brennan plans to return to Hawaii for his senior year.

Brennan passed for three touchdowns in the third quarter and two more late in the fourth quarter to buffer the win. His final touchdown was a short pass to Jason Rivers who took the ball in for a 75-yard touchdown.

Hawaii finished second in the Western Athletic Conference, only losing to Boise State in conference play. The Warriors went 11-3 overall and score 60 points or more four different times. They scored 40 points or more 11 times, and left some teams sitting in the dust at enormous point margins. In a stretch of three games from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11, the Warriors won over conference opponents, 68-10, 63-10 and 61-17. In the following week they slacked off and doused San Jose St by one less touchdown, 54-15.

Brennan was once a backup at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California to none other than Matt Leinart of USC fame.

The Hawaii Bowl was the final game for outgoing ASU coach Dirk Koetter.

we could probably argue about it forever.....but congrats to hawaii on a great season. watched the entire second half. brennan has a cannon. i don't know how motivated that ASU team was(they sure didn't know how to tackle), but it's obviously a great win for the program and will result in a top 25 ranking after the bowls

Yep.  Glad you finally got to watch them play.  The second half of the ASU game was how we played the entire season.

I'm excited about the draft.  We could have seven guys drafted:

DE Ikaika Alama-Francis
OL Samson Satele
DE Mel Purcell
OL Dane Uperesa
FS Leonard Peters
OL Tala Esera
RB Nate Ilaoa

That's about the order I think they'll go (if they all get drafted).  I think all but Nate and Tala have gotten combine invites so far?  Something like that.  Colt will declare if he is projected to go in the first round.  I hope he comes back, but if he doesn't our back up Tyler Graunke is pretty darn good too.  Another one of those "system" QBs.   :)

Could someone please move this to the sports board?  Thanks.

One writer got it right on Brennan, about a month too late.   :-\

2. The Heisman has to be awarded on the day after the national championship

We all blew it on the Reggie Bush over Vince Young call last year, and after the ugly BCS Championship game, it's human nature to second-guess the choice of Troy Smith as the runaway Heisman winner. However, who was the second option? Darren McFadden and Brady Quinn both lost in their bowl games, and Mike Hart had an awful day against USC. Colt Brennan? Ray Rice? If nothing else, it would've been a fantastic debate. I've literally sat here for the last ten minutes trying to figure out what my post-bowl Heisman ballot would be (and I'm still not happy about it). I finally decided it'd be 1) Brennan, 2) Smith, 3) John Beck.

Well . . . I only follow one college football team.   :)  Practice started on Friday.  Eleven of last year's seniors made it into NFL camps, including both of our starting DEs, three of our O-line, and both of our RBs.  Lot of holes to fill, but we have great talent in camp.  Some very good recruits.  Our defense is probably already better than last year.  Greg McMackin is back as defensive coordinator.

The entire state is after our AD's hide for not filling out our schedule (only 12 games).  Herman Frazier should be looking for a job.  In his defense, teams were literally afraid to come and play us.  We offered over $700,000 and an ESPN spot to a number of teams in the Pac-10, Big 12, etc. and they all turned down the money.  Afraid to lose.

A few, including Phil Steele, has predicted Hawaii will run the table and play in a BCS bowl this year.

My early Heisman vote goes to Colt, of course.  He'll have the best WR group in the nation.  He's bigger and stronger.  He'll be the all-time career TD leader in only three years.  But some dog from the ACC will probably win it.  How is that Troy Smith doing?   :)

I am a MICHIGAN grad and the big ten is not a joke conference....but MICHIGAN has no defense...Brady Quinn is not that great...the way we beat them last year surprised me....maybe Ron English is actually getting MICHIGAN a defense...O$U is always good and getting another great recruiting class....i think the pac-10 is a joke conference....just USC and CAL....USC is loaded at every spot and get the freakish athletes....no one can stop USC...they get 2-3 5 star backs every year....Taylor Mays is a freak....just think Matt Leinhart was gonna go to MICHIGAN....but we had to have John Nevarre....ewwww....Look for MICHIGAN to have a 7 wins and 4 losses

Oh my bad.  Those who actually watch them play say our WRs are only third best in the nation.

Phil Steele:

Phil's Top 10 Wide Receiver Units: California, Louisville, Hawaii, Purdue, Texas, Florida, Alabama, New Mexico State, Florida State, Oklahoma  http://www.burntorangenation.com/storyonly/2007/6/22/12753/7826

Or eight best (Lindy's):

The only downer with Lindy's projections is that they rate Hawaii's stellar WR corps only 8th-best in the nation. Although Brennan no doubt is the best QB in the land, the triumvirate of WRs Davone Bess, Jason Rivers, and Ryan Grice-Mullen is the best in the land....and much more consistent than the groups at Louisville or Cal.  http://brennanforheisman.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=771492%3ATopic%3A81

Or first (Sporting News blog):

#1.Hawaii
The Rainbows have three solid threats at all times. Davone Bess has been 1rst team WAC two years in a row. He finished with 1220 yards recieving and had NFL scouts drooling. Rivers is a solid-as-a-rock senior who finished with nearly 1200 yds himself. Grice-Mullin is a little pocket rocket and the rainbows WR's look like a pot of gold for senior qb Colt Brennan. When you thought it couldn't get worse...they'll cycle in about 3 other experienced 4.35 types.   http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/buckifreak/tag/CollegeFootball

The proof will be in the pudding as we have the best offense in the nation again, and we put a bunch of players (includig our WRs) in the pros again.

you think those guys actually watch all the games as well? i read the articles. i'd honestly take Nebraska receivers over those guys. the last thing in the world any team in the WAC recruits is defensive backs. Brennan threw for 5000 yards(?) last year. of course you're going to have a few 1000 yard receivers. doesn't make them NFL calibre players or all american types. someone has to be there to catch the ball.

Phil Steele does indeed watch games, including UH games.  I wouldn't trade our WRs for anyone.  They were studs regardless of competition, including at Alabama, against Purdue, Oregon State, and Arizona State.  Jason Rivers torched ASU for over 300 yards receiving.  Bess was a freshman All American.  They will both get drafted.  Grice-Mullins probably will too.  These are NFL caliber players.

I bet he can't wait to join Timmy Chang in the NFL Europe. Passing stats at Hawaii have always been bloated because

1. they pass the ball 50 times a game
and
2. they play in the WAC where nobody plays defence

timmy chang is with the eagles i think...he's impressive carrying a clip board.

From CFN:

Davone Bess, Jr. Hawaii
The Hawaii receiving corps is loaded and should blow up with an even bigger season. The best of the bunch is the 5-10, 195-pound Bess, who led the team with 96 catches for 1,220 yards and 15 touchdowns at the inside H. That's a career for most receivers, and his two-year total is something otherworldly with 185 grabs for 2,344 yards and 29 scores. He's lightning quick, always open and as glue fingered as they come. A consistent scorer, with at least one touchdown in seven straight games last season, he also shows up in prime time with some of his biggest games coming against Boise State, Nevada, Purdue and Oregon State. He'll play at the next level.

Preseason 25 Best Receivers
1. Mario Manningham, Jr. Michigan
2. Earl Bennett, Jr. Vanderbilt
3. DeSean Jackson, Jr. California
4. Davone Bess, Jr. Hawaii
5. Malcolm Kelly, Jr. Oklahoma
6. Sammie Strougher, Sr. Oregon State
7. Dorien Bryant, Sr. Purdue
