i don't trust any list that has Mario Manningham as the best receiver in the nation. Give me a F***ing break on that one.

I watched the Hawaii bowl and i saw Bess(at least i think it was him) tear that ASU defence apart, although those guys were WIDE OPEN the entire second half and Brennan was firing darts.

Nebraska doesn't have one STUD receiver although Purify has the tools to be one, but the Huskers have serious depth at that position and a Heisman calibre QB to throw them the ball this year.

I am a MICHIGAN grad and the big ten is not a joke conference....but MICHIGAN has no defense...Brady Quinn is not that great...the way we beat them last year surprised me....maybe Ron English is actually getting MICHIGAN a defense...O$U is always good and getting another great recruiting class....i think the pac-10 is a joke conference....just USC and CAL....USC is loaded at every spot and get the freakish athletes....no one can stop USC...they get 2-3 5 star backs every year....Taylor Mays is a freak....just think Matt Leinhart was gonna go to MICHIGAN....but we had to have John Nevarre....ewwww....Look for MICHIGAN to have a 7 wins and 4 losses

no michigan fan EVER would predict a 4 loss season. they are all arrogant asses who (along with the pre season voters) tell us every year Michigan is a top 10 team and almost every year the Wolverines go out and prove the voters wrong, yet the next season they are right back where they shouldn't be....in the preseason top 10

Chang is in Canada.  Never made the Eagles final roster.

Chang is the backup in Hamilton. they are terrible this year, although they finally won their first game. he's played some mop up duty. their starting QB is alright, but it might be time to see what Chang can do and have him start a game.

That was Jason Rivers. He had 14 catches for 308 yards and 2 TDs.  A bowl record.  Bess only had 5 for 65 and 1 TD in that game.  Grice-Mullins had 8 for 111 and 2 TDs.  It's a terrific group.  Our back-ups are very good too.

I don't think anyone's list is gospel.  I view them mainly as discussion pieces.  But I do pay attention to guys like Phil Steele and Mel Kiper who actually watch games and evaluate film.  That's really the only way to truly evaluate a player IMO.

He should have gone to Canada right out of UH.

Colt looks really good in practice.  Had the pleasure of sitting next to him on a flight to L.A. a few weeks ago.  Very bright, humble kid.  He is going to be a great pro.

UH quarterback Brennan seen as an island treasure

By ERIC PRISBELL
The Washington Post

University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan's mid-January decision to return to school for his senior season delighted an entire state and set the stage for one of the most intriguing story lines of the season.

When talking about his quarterback, Hawai'i coach June Jones tends to border on hyperbole except when he tosses out statistics such as this: Colt Brennan threw for more yards last season than Michigan's Chad Henne and Ohio State's Troy Smith combined. And Brennan did it in fewer attempts.
"That just blows me away," Jones said.

Brennan's mid-January decision to return to school for his senior season delighted an entire state and set the stage for one of the most intriguing story lines of the season. For Hawai'i, this season is about more than trying to reach the rarefied heights of a Bowl Championship Series game. It's also about whether a school can field a Heisman Trophy winner from half a world away.

Both Jones and Brennan realize that, barring unforeseen events, the quarterback who sometimes communicates with linemen in Samoan should again accumulate mind-numbing statistics. But they also know that to win the award, Brennan must overcome two factors beyond his control: perception and exposure. Among other strong Heisman hopefuls, Brennan is a man truly on an island, dealing with a unique set of obstacles.

"Something great would have to happen for him to get a shot at it," Jones conceded in a telephone interview. "I think he will be in New York as a finalist. Whether he gets it or not, who knows."

Brennan even acknowledged in a comprehensive DVD — "A Colt Following," released by Hawai'i as part of his Heisman campaign — that "you need the right things to match up" to have a realistic chance to win the award as a player from a far-off land playing in the Western Athletic Conference. After breaking or tying 18 NCAA records last season, Brennan got his hopes up about a possible invitation to the Heisman ceremony in New York, only to finish sixth in the balloting.

One of the perceptions Brennan continues to fight is that he is a "system quarterback" who excels primarily because of the run-and-shoot offense of Jones, who has used the pass-happy attack throughout his career, most notably when he was quarterbacks coach with the NFL's Houston Oilers two decades ago. Last season, Brennan completed 406 passes, which was more than 83 Division I-A teams ATTEMPTED.

During the week Boise State annually prepares for Hawai'i's offense, "every player is excited to be the scout quarterback because he gets to throw all the time," said Broncos coach Chris Petersen, who believes the offensive system should not detract from Brennan's ability. "It's hard to replicate that precision and the timing. He is as good as anyone in the country."

Brennan believes his completion rate of 72.6 percent, which was tops in the nation last season, runs counter to the belief that run-and-shoot quarterbacks often have low completion percentages. Jones characterized Brennan as "so unconsciously accurate," a quarterback who reminds him of former NFL quarterbacks Jeff George and Dan Marino.

"They are the only three guys I have watched on tape, for whatever reason, because of their quick release, the ball has not left their hand but their right foot is off the ground," Jones said. "Those three players are probably the three of the most accurate passers that I have watched."

One criticism Brennan is bound to hear is that Hawai'i's schedule is soft, which could give him a chance to eclipse last season's NCAA-record 58 touchdown passes. The Warriors' toughest road game is at Nevada, which finished 8-5 last season. They also will play Division I-AA schools Northern Colorado and Charleston Southern.

Considering Brennan's record-breaking junior season and the attention he subsequently received from sports agents, Jones was surprised his quarterback decided to come back to school. By returning, Brennan should create a one-of-a-kind Heisman race.

"I have had a whole lot of guys in the Pro Bowl and two guys in the Hall of Fame," Jones said. "Colt is the best quarterback I have watched or coached in my 35 years."

ok i see where you're coming from, but then who are the two geniuses(sp?) that voted them #1 in the preseason poll. i think it was the coaches poll, but it might have been the AP poll?!?!

you can't say Notre Dame is overrated this year as they are not even in most preseason polls, but i agree that they are given the benefit of the doubt most seasons.

has the Hawaii media ever touched on what happened at Colorado? it seems to be something that's been brushed under the carpet.

maybe he was just being made an example of, or maybe he wasn't very high on the depth chart at the time, but back then it took alot to get kicked off the team at CU. that place was a total 'bizarro world' at the time.

Yea, i seen him in practice and he looks great but i do not see him as the best. Mario had knee surgery last year and missed 5 games and did not show what he can do. I look for Videl Hazelton or Patrick Turner to be the best.

Touched it?  It was beaten to death.  He went into a girl's room, refused to leave when she asked him to, and was arrested and charged with burglary.  Trumped up charge.  Really much ado about nothing.  The horse is dead.  It's a non-story.

He has been nothing short of outstanding both on and off the field at UH.

Brennan pleaded not guilty and denied abusing the woman. A jury convicted him of felony burglary and trespassing but acquitted the quarterback of sexual assault and indecent exposure. Prosecution on misdemeanor sexual contact was deferred, meaning the charge has basically been dropped, the district attorney's office said. He was sentenced to 60 hours of community service, four years' probation and seven days in jail.

of course he was only a walk on so CU probably just passed him off to the police and had no problem throwing him off the team. that place was a friggin nut house. actually still is. Dan Hawkins has put his foot in his mouth more times than he's won since going there.

so when is Hawaii going to go on the road and play someone decent?

I'm taking a wait and see on this one. the huskers were so loaded at running back that a hs all american transfered out because he was so low on the depth chart, but none of the guys have turned into game breakers. there hasn't been one at Nebraska since Ahman Green.

YAWN.  Dead horse.  No one is talking about it.  It's a non-issue.

I guess UH could go play powerhouses like Iowa State, Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado . . . .   We actually just signed a home and away deal with Colorado.  Starts in a couple years.

We went to Alabama last year.  We open at Florida and play at Oregon State next year.  We've played at USC, at Michigan State, etc.  We play at Boise and Nevada at their places every other year.

Part of the reason our schedule sucks so badly this year is Michigan State breached it's contract to come here.  We beat them last time they came.  They paid a $250,000 penalty.  Bunch of pansies.  We couldn't get another replacement.  Part of the reason we couldn't replace them is our AD sucks, and part is schools were literally afraid to play us.  It's sort of flattering.   :)

:)  You know I'll be talking some smack as we get closer to Thanksgiving.  Don't forget the game is at Aloha Stadium this year.

Boise had an outstanding season.  I was rooting for them in the bowl game.  Great win.

I think we will be eating your freshman QB for dinner.   :)  Our D has a ton of potential, despite losing three starters to the pros.  Not sure how anyone is going to stop our offense.  We'll be unstoppable again on O.

nobody wants to make the trip to Hawaii. too far to travel and now the possibility of losing isn't something that the alumni at a traditional powerhouse is going to accept. i forgot about the Alabama game. you could have used them on the schedule. if Hawaii goes undefeated (and they probably should) and makes it into the BCS people are going to scream bloody murder that they got in there playing 2 div. I-AA teams. but i am guessing that one of those was to replace the michigan state game.
nebraska had the same thing happen a few years ago.
it's tough for smaller schools w ith good teams to even get a home and home anymore. a lot of big name schools won't even sign a two for one deal because they don't want to go play a road game that they might lose against a team that their fans and alums think they should win.
Colorado will play anyone. I detest the Buffaloes, but the one thing you have to credit them with is that they load up their OOC schedule with quality opponents.

Lucky for him.   :)  The Boise game will be a sellout.  Our fans will be nuts.  Even though we have a lot of old farts at the stadium, when we pack 50,000 in the seats the place is rocking.

Honestly, I'm more worried about playing at San Jose and at Nevada this year.

Colorado will play anyone. I detest the Buffaloes, but the one thing you have to credit them with is that they load up their OOC schedule with quality opponents.

Dude you have no idea how hard it has been to schedule games.  We offered nearly $1 million and an ESPN televised game to a bunch of schools and they all turned it down.  Unbelievable.

Good luck to the Cornhuskers.  And thanks a bunch for Leon Jackson.   :)  He is going to be very good.
