That sentance is very interesting. Quite possibly life reaches a point, such as humans, where total annihilation of ones self and life around becomes possible. Looking at the world like it is in this age... it adds a lot of weight to that arguement.

i remember good old steven hawkings comment on this somewhere, and i liked the idea.
the reason is that by the time a civilization reached a level of advancement sufficient for routine space travel and colonization, they will have already developed(and used) weapons powerful enough to destroy themselves. sounds like we're right on track.

interesting stuff...i dont know about the 'seedling hypothesis' but the other stuff they discussed sounds reasonable. i really agree with the gaia theory stuff.
