College Football Season: Who's no. 2?
« on: October 14, 2006, 09:52:03 PM »
The Ohio State University seems to be firmly in the driver's seat.  Who's no. 2?

Michigan? . . . will play OSU. Wish I could be there.
USC? . . . still eking out those wins.
Auburn? Came back this week from a horrendous loss to Arkansas, and beat No. 2 Florida.

Other teams lurking: Tennessee, West Virginia, Louisville . . . maybe even California (who woulda thought the hippies could play ball?)

ive always found college football ranking realy strange....
texas was considered what, number 2 going into the year? they then proceed to lose to number one, and beat the crap out of everyone else they play, so why should they not be number 2 anymore?

thats the problem with football...too few games, too much speculation, all-round shitty compared to superior sports such as basketball and real football.

#2 doesn't matter right now. there are too many heads up games to be played Mich/tOSU, WVa./Louisville, USC/Cal, SEC Title Game. Things will become clearer over the next month

Don't even get me started on these ridiculous rankings and the "national championship game."  How stupid is it that you have to win every game to even be in the position to play for a "national championship"?  Makes no sense.  Auburn laid an egg, so they're out, even though they might be the best team in the country.  USC looks pretty average, yet they're no. 2 in the AP.  Texas blew it by losing to Ohio State.  I think the entire system stinks.

And to answer your question:  I have no idea.   :)

actually Michigan is #2 in the AP poll, but that poll is irrelevant anyways because they took themselves out of the BCS

You don't lose 27-10 at home to Arkansas and call yourselves the best team in the nation. USC has played some weak ball in the past couple weeks, but they did hammer Arkansas on the road 50-14.

and yes i agree with you the BCS is a joke. Every year they tweek that formula because someone bitches about it. Then they split the title twice anyways. They originally made up the formula because people bitched about the polls. Then when USC got left out because of their weak schedule the fans bitched that they needed to use the polls MORE.

still....nothing beats college football on a saturday, even if i have to watch PAC 10 games on ABC every week.

Shows you how much I pay attention to those polls.  So what if Auburn laid an egg?  Happens all the time.  The Steelers had to win, what, 8 straight to get a ring last year?  If the Titans would have beaten the Colts a couple weeks ago, like they almost did, the Colts would still be a vastly superior team that just had a bad day.

I think the system would be far more legitimate if they had playoffs like every other division and pretty much every other sport.  Old dumb traditions die hard, particularly when so much cash is involved.

You said the magic word, Beach....CASH!  That's why we'll never see a playoff system in I-A college football.  If I had to say who's legitimately #2, I'd have to go with Michigan right now.  But every year when I'm ready to give them their just due, they slip and fall hard.  So, I wanna see them finish out.  I NEVER thought Florida deserved to be #2.  USC is struggling, yes, but they keep winning!  Championship teams find a way to win.

Bottom line though, I'm with the rest of the gang in saying that the BCS system is BS.

exactly my thoughts. they have Iowa next . . . that's going to be a difficult game, even if Iowa's had a bit of a rough patch lately.

Yep, Iowa's so up and down right now.  But they have the talent to beat Michigan.  I know this sounds crazy, but Michigan has Indiana on the road, and the Hoosiers have been quietly getting better.

West Virginia and Louisville have played nobody this year. Nobody is talking about them much because everyone knows that one of them will lose when they play each other and i'm willing to bet there wouldn't be much of an uproar if one of them was left out of the title game and passed over by a 1 loss team

Rutgers is the feel good story of the year. They'll be exposed as middle of the poll team by the end of the year

michigan....give me a break. they are over rated every friggin year. they were 7-5 last year, yet they are still in the preseason top 10 this year. that's total BS. and because every pollster out there uses the bump method they've somehow managed to find themselves in the number 2 spot in the B(C)S poll. ohio state, usc, auburn, florida, lsu are all better teams. west virginia would probably thump them as well.

yeah . . . totally overrated. it's not like they're the winningest program in college football or anything.

Lloyd Carr is not as good a college coach as Tressel or Carroll, but the athletes that Michigan fields are as good as any out there.

Of course we'll never know any of this, because they won't actually play each other.

there's a good chance Michigan will play either USC (or cal . . . can't believe that's even a thought in my head) or Florida in the Rose bowl . . . assuming tOSU goes to the natl championship game.

I think the season's as long as it can be for student-athletes . . . so I'm not pushing for a playoff. although there needs to be some parity b/w conferences like the Big 12, which has a championship game, and the Big 10. which does not.

I can empathize since I've actually watched Michigan-OSU at the big house.  Buckeyes can be goons.

do you really think a 7-5 team should be a preseason top 10 the next year? they wouldn't beat any of those teams i listed on a neutral field.

i'll agree with you on this one. i don't think a playoff would solve anything. it would be too hard to determine how many teams (someone worthy would be left out), where to play the games, and how to seed the teams.

the conference championship games are here to stay for one reason. $$$$$ and lots of it. even the teams that will most likely never play in one (vanderbilt, kentucky, baylor, kansas) benefit from them. they punish the higher ranked teams that play in them more than they help

Obviously the answer is yes, since they are undefeated and ranked #2 in the country. The caliber of athlete we had returning dictated the ranking and well as some key players who had significant injuries. Time will tell, but I think this team is the real deal.

that's what I thought when they went to the Rose bowl to play USC . . . although this team has performed better (so far) than that one.

Funny how Division I-AA, II, III, and NAIA can all do it.  If I sat in a room with five guys we could devise a system in one day.  It ain't rocket science.
