Reconstruction in Iraq and other places.

So, I was looking at all this timeline stuff in the news, and it reminded me of the Civil war for some reason.

War was over in 1865 . . .

The Union army left the South in 1877, until then it pretty much ran the whole show

It rammed the 14th amendment down each southern state's throat before it left.

and this was a war b/w brothers.

Why the fucck are we treating Iraqis w kid gloves?

Why do they get to have their own government?

Why do they get to come up w their own constitution?

Yeah, they're their own nation, and not "rebels," but I thought we were there to make 'em like us. they're not our brothers.

So why the pussyfooting? 

PS.  Despite those radical steps in the South, Civil Rights and equal protection remained a dream for almost another 100 years.

PPS.  Now I expect the Muslim horde to come tell me I'm an imperialist.  Damn straight, I am. And your Mohammedan arses wouldn't be able to say a word to me if the Union army hadn't made the SOuth ratify some key amendments to the Constitution.

good point alg.

today... iraqi govt officials getting on camera, right after bush reiterates our committment, and they tell the world that the US won't be telling them a timeline.

WTF? 

We gave them power, we gave 2700 lives in Iraq, and we give more everyday.  And they want to tell US what we'll be doing?  Gimme a break. 

Can anyone, will anyone here, still argue that we are over there to "liberate the iraqis"?

Can anyone, will anyone here, still argue that we are over there to "remove WMDs"?

Can anyone, will anyone here, still argue that we are over there to "create peace"?

WMD issue is over, right?  They elected their own govt, so they're free now, right?  And our presence is only causing more conflict, so we're hurting more than creating peace, right?

Al-Gebra, Iraq isn't the south.. If the US leaves then they'll have their own civil war and the Sunnis will be slaughtered.  :-X 

The US could be much harsher with Iraq and it wouldn't mean anything. They can't make the Iraq like the US, because Iraqis are muslims and there are HUGE cultural differences. It's already a disaster over there and what Al-Gebra is proposing would make it worse.

camel- correct. which is why we'd put it on the UN's doorstep to deal with.  Or we could give the Sunni's a ton of guns before we leave.  Or we could give them 4 weeks to pack up and move.  Or we could put up a damn electric fence and wish em well.

Shit, let's bring them over to the US, set them up in the desert in N Mex and TX, and have the sunnis guard our border.  

Point is, why should one more american die so that one iraqi won't die?  Would those sunnis die for us?
