I don't get this about FLEX MAGAZINE....
« on: October 26, 2006, 04:04:30 PM »
Peter McGough has stated on several occasions throughout Flex that they do not condone or glorify steroids. Yet they glorify these 'athletes' who grace their very pages stating their sole use of nutrition. C'mon Peter, let's at least acknowledge the fact that it's not all nutrition.... Well, I guess that's what Muscular Development is for.  ;D

FLEX is smart.

steroids are extremely taboo in the mainstream.

yeah, all the guys use, but why gloify it and bring heat on yourself.

And that is exactly why I don't subscribe to Flex anymore. I just wait 'til I see it in the store. By the way, they actually called you asking that?

they actually called me and asked me then went on to tell me that they were going to renew my subscription for me at a special rate for the next 3 years.  I said "I gotta be honest with you, I've been buying BB mags since 1986 and I have not read anything new in flex in at least 3 years and told him to please cancell my subscription.  They then proceeded to dick me out of my last issue.

I just renewed for another year, I just don't feel like actually going to the store to buy it if there is a good issue, I would rather just pay $30 for the whole year and have it come to my house.

MD on the other hand I only buy when it's a great issue cause sometimes they suck in my opinion and are overpriced with hundreds of pages of ads.

This is only said to save face from the media & public. To cover their ass so to speak. Every muscle magazine does that.

You mean it doesn't annoy you if you happen to be out and about and see that the current issue is already on the news stand and you're staying waiting for your copy days later?

I got news for you all.  If you don't buy the mags - you won't see the ads for the newest snake oil on the market.  You then won't buy that crappy product (how many have you tried over the years - too many).  Without the mags, you will never be exposed to this marketing and temptation...

There, now I just saved you lots of money on both magazines and bogus sups.

Sometimes I get pissed about it but usually at my job (Golds) we get the issues before I even do so it's not too bad.

I dont know guys, there have been a few recent issues where they really enlightened me with some groundbreaking stuff, such as:

- Squats, deadlifts, benches for size
- Take minimum 1g protein per/lb bodyweight
- Steroids are bad, why not use the Weider principles as demonstrated by Jay Cutler?
- How to build a huge chest by Arnold S. still interesting after the 56th time printed.
- How Joe Weider "the master-blaster, trainer of champions" created the sport of boybuilding by training, advising, teaching how to pose and diet all the greats, from Scott all the way to Cutler, single-handedly, and with no personal gain.
- The amazing editorial by McGough stating how great the Weiders are, and how we'd all be reading Farmers Weekly if it wasnt for them.
- The amazing special editorial (10th so far this year) by Joe Weider, on how he brought Arnold over, and made him.
- The amazing special super-dupper guest editorial by Arnold S. on how Joe Weider brought him over, and helped him a little on his path to greatness.
- The amazing guest-editorial by Franco on how he was there when Joe Weider brought Arnold over, and how Arnold said that he really wanted Franco to come to the USA to train with him(and carry his bag, and make him hot cocoa), so Joe brought him over.
- The 76 page special spread Arnold commemorative issue(3rd this year), with never before seen pics.
- Ronnie Colemans column, amazing, I never knew he was so eloquent, and had the writing skills and prose of Julian Schmidt.
- Dorians column, which is very informative, last month he was asked how to bring up quads, he replied to do one set of squats(with 25 warm-up sets), this month, how to bring-up chest, he replied one set incline bench.
- The Hard Times segment is great, but I thought there were other federations with other athletes, and other countries, besides the NPC, IFBB and the U.S.

I love FLEX mag!

I like how they cut the contest coverage down to 1 page and don't even talk about 3/4 of the guys that were in the show.  I read one report a couple of years ago and it was all about the writers stay in the city that the show was held in, it was liek a commercial for that town, he didn't say one word about the show. ??? ???

They put guys on the covers and exploit the pros because the IFBB has told them they don't take steroids.  They tell them they test them and they all pass.  So that means they don't take them. ::)  The IFBB would never condone steroids.  They are the epitome of BB. ::) It is great being an IFBB pro.  Lots of money, great retirement fund, great benefits, great health plan, and the most important thing is if you have a sponsor willing to give them allot of money you can buy win a championship.

..FLEX is a product like anything else.  You buy a Ford, you know what you're getting.  Same thing.

MD is a product, and it makes it's name off being the "badass uncensored voice" of bodybuilding.  Bullshit.  It's no more 'new' or ground breaking than FLEX.  Bottom line is, why do you read a bodybuilding mag in the first place?...I read it for motivation and to follow the scene in a way that isn't as negative as MD.  Sure they reprint things you already know.  Sure it could be better....but really, the things most people here want to see in FLEX is...ALREADY available here on getbig, so why bother?

A magazine that prints ALL the stuff about bodybuilding would sell amongst the hardcore, but in the end it would only serve to further alienate those trainers in the world into the public's misconception that "it's all about the drugs"...which of course it isn't. You guys who argue for steroid info in the mags are missing one point...the general public are uneducated about bodybuilding, nor do they care to learn, NOR do they give a rat's ass about it.  What, you think they're gonna appreciate the truth?  Nope. "It's all drugs!" is what they'll say.

If you like FLEX, buy it.  If a boring as wanna-be mag like MD (which, by the way, makes it's money by bashing the likes of FLEX mag at every opportunity) then pretend to be "hardcore" and do so.

In all truth the best training magazine is Ironman, plus it's got hot chicks.  But I still won't buy it regularly....it just ain't FLEX.
