Seriously is that all it costs to go to that college.  I thought it would be allot more.  There is a high school here that costs more than that.  Punahou High costs around $18,000 tops.  I can't spell the name of the school I am thnking of but I think it was around $27,000 a year.

It is alot more, try 35k+ if not more, I asked a woman at work whose  daughter friend going there...if it wasn't for the scholarship, she wouldn't be going there, but it would cost you more than Lexus IS250 loaded...education costs today.

I love the spokeman (black guy) speaking out against the racial stereotyping, while wearing a pair of gangster pimp glasses. Ghetto fabulous.

The spokesman was a woamn, and very well spoken.

The spokesman I saw was absolutely a man, but I'm sure more than one person has been speaking on camera, regarding this issue.

My spokesman too was well spoken, he was simply wearing "Stunna shades."

I was watching the local news and posting on getbig at the same time last night

but try this linkhttp://wbal.com/news/story.asp?articleid=50451

Sigma Chi an white frat threw a "Halloween in the Hood". Take it the way you want after you read the article.

ROFL hahahahah

seriously what a joke this is. how typical and predictable for them to cry racism ::)

how many blacks go to john hopkins anyway besides the athletes? no skeleton pirates? ::) its a GOOD THING that they are making fun of the hip-hop culture, it is a plague to our society and deserves nothing but contempt. any intelligent self-respecting black person would want to SEPERATE themselves from that kind of association, not connect himself with it.

I don't know how many blacks attend JHU, but I do know that the the University has been trying to get higher achieving blacks from Baltimore  high schools to attend JHU. The kids that come from these school are serious about their education, and don't think just because their in the inner city that they only produce athletes. The school I had Student-taught in, which was Lake Clfiton-Eastern High, is down the street from JHU, and they had both high achieving students and athletes.   Many of these student woudn't be able to attend University, whether it be from my alma mater, Morgan State University, down the the street or JHU . These student earned their way to JHU.

As far as Hip-Hop culture, the same was said about Rock and Roll, and before that Jazz...

Good.  Obviously they do need to learn about American History.  Obviously they should have know better than to do something so stupid

Let me guess.  You are black?

It seems to me the protest caused more problems than the party.

If black people would have done it..it would have been fine, right?

The hanging pirate would have just been a pirate instead of a symbolic black man?  Oh wait, maybe it meant that anyways.

Just as Tre said, like to know more about the hanging skeleton.  If there's any reference to that being a black person then its way out of line and the frat boys deserve punishment (or a little beating).  If its just a skeleton, or skeleton pirate, then people need to relax and not get so offended so easily.

Parker, gangsta rap and its culture brought to the mainsteam takes things way farther than jazz and rock and roll ever did and is a particularly negative influence on some of the kids trying to emulate these gangstar rap characters, these kids in particular need the most positive influences.  People that can't see that Bill Cosby had some good points either aren't thinking or don't truely care.  Even worse are these hordes of suburban kids now emulating these rap stars who are a product of record executive promotions.

There was also a news report about young women using halloween to dress up like whores.   Actually, its true...if you go out to any bar costume party.  But, as long as its not my g/f or sister, I'm all for it!

BALTIMORE - Johns Hopkins University has suspended the Sigma Chi fraternity because of a "Halloween in the Hood" party that drew protests by black students.

The invitation to the party, posted on the Web site Facebook, encouraged guests to wear "regional clothing from our locale" with jewelry including "bling bling ice ice, grills" and "hoochie hoops."

The party, held Saturday night at the fraternity house, featured a skeleton pirate hanging on a noose.

Black Student Union members protested the party on Monday, saying the appearance of the image and the language on the invitation highlighted racial tensions at Hopkins and the strained relations between the university and the surrounding community.

Protesters held signs showing a historical lynching next to a picture of the fraternity's skeleton.

"We need to educate the student body because apparently some people weren't given much of a proper lesson in the history of our country," said Yasmene Mumby, 20, a junior and BSU member.

University officials suspended all the fraternity's activities pending a full investigation. President William Brody said in a statement that he was "personally offended" and called the matter "deeply disturbing."

Sigma Chi's international headquarters on Monday also ordered the chapter's operations suspended for 45 days and said a full investigation was under way. It said further disciplinary action was possible.

"We are naturally very concerned about these allegations, and are committed to holding every one of our members accountable to our fraternity's values of friendship, justice and learning," Mark Anderson, executive secretary of Sigma Chi, said on the fraternity's Web site.

More than 100 students attended a campus forum Monday night before a panel of top administrators. Three men who identified themselves as Sigma Chi members stood up during the meeting and apologized for the actions of the author of the invitation, calling it shameful.

Marvin "Doc" Cheatham, president of the Baltimore branch of the NAACP, said he intends to explore legal action against both the fraternity and the university.

Special Ed's Comments:

Let me get this straight...you can't hang a SKELETON PIRATE anymore? You can't dress up like FLAVOR FLAV? And you especially can't do BOTH? A really pathetic commentary on the state of affairs today.

Recently I've seen more "bling, bling, pinky ring" ghetto white kids than I have traditional black kids adorned in their ghetto hip hop crap.

But mods., shouldn't this thread be moved over to the "General Topics" board??!!

I mean after all...this topic/subject has absolutely nothing to do with G&O on the wonderful current BB scene/lifestyle of: rampant illegal drug use; illegal drug OD'ing causing name current/former pro. BBers to strangely fall over dead in the prime of their manhood, or are routinely being rushed to the emergency rooms with illegal drug-related health problems; the never-ending lies and deceit promulgated to the gullible general public by the BB mags. as to "how the name pro. IFBB BBers REALLY supplement their training"; the huge $$$ backing of name BBers by the gay and schmoe community; and the other routine BBer criminal activity such as illegal drug dealing and murder (e.g. "the Craigers").

Why, why, all of these "estimable" on-going activities in the current BB scene/lifestyle are enough to make the dedicated, CLEAN-LIVING, moral, pioneers of the iron-game/BB like Mark Berry, George Jowett, Earle Liedermann, and Peary Rader  to roll over in their graves, and make all surviving old-school NATURAL BBers to hang their heads in shame!!

Oh where, oh where, have you gone Jack Lalanne, George Eifermann, Reg Park, Melvin Wells, Jim Park, Abbye Stockton, Bruce Randall, Steve Reeves and Bill Pearl (both circa 1950's)...??!!

As I was getting to leave this morning, I had the TV on soft so I wouldn't wake the house.  They had a pic of a guy dressed as ABL, complet with AK-47, and flairs strapped to His chest, as a suicide bomber would.  I couldn't hear the story, but they were putting Him in the back seat of a black and white, so He must of sutured up some commotion.  I'm sure the full story will be on @ 6 ;D

Don't know too much about a skeleton, but if you have Halloween int Hood" and you have people dressed as slaves as well, what do you think the skeleton represented? It probably was a sly attempt by somebody to disguise the fact that they did, so they can say, "oh it's just a skeleton". You gotta remember this is JHU, not some hick comm college.

Rock and roll took things to the extreme (the saying "Sex, drugs, and rock and roll", anyone?)
I agree that majority of Hip-hop is negative, but there are postive ones. But think about this, since it is mostly white suburban kids pumping and buying rap, would they buy the music saying, "Real girls get down on the floor...", and "n___, who shot ya". Versus, "brotha, get your mind right" or "Soul Sista, your my.."

Which one would sell? As long as black folk talk about killing or disrespecting one another it seems like it sells more (just look at the spectacle, "Flavor of Love" :-X)

i agree with Bill Cosby. But, i beleive to have a even keel, pos and neg view points.  But,Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton make me want to spit bile... I , aw f  it. this mess is annoying to me.

good post parker.

most of what i read about the party didnt seem racist to me. however people dressing up as slaves is brutal.
the thing that bothers me is black people crying racism for every little thing. im not black so maybe i see it different. and parker like you said, people like jessse jackson and al sharpton dont help much. although i find jesse to be abit better.

i think if the black community would ease up on calling everything/everyone racist it would be less of a deal to people. by them doing this i think i makes people angrier.

just my opinion and i may be way off base. please feel free to reply.

I feel that black people need to stop focusing on Racism so much and focus on thier communities. Racism will lways be here. You can go look under every rock and tree and find racism if you want, that is the easy thing. What's more important, Cracker Barrell not serving black people (Its called "Cracker Barrell" ::)), or young men being killed and incarcerated? Nobdy seems to want to address that issue, particularly the Baby boom Generation, who f it up for Gen X and Y.

I could care less if they were wearing pimp suits and gold chains.  Only problem is that some of them were dressed as slaves as well.... ::)  The Pirate had a noose around it.

So lets do some real math....dress as your favorite black + nooses + mock lyching = RACISM

The party was in poor taste and was not wisely conceived.  They can say what they want but their actions speak for themselves

Good posts, Parker.

So long as we continue to rely on clothing and automobiles to define our personhood, I'm one of those "my-people-will-always-be-slaves"  Blacks.  Slavery still exists - they (we) just look different today.

Sharpton is actually getting better in his advancing years, focusing more on what we need to do to improve our own communities, in general.

Jackson has done more damage to Blacks in America in the last 20 years than almost anyone else.  HE is the one who has victimized our people over and over and over.  This man isn't a hero, he's a pariah...but you're not supposed to say that.

Regarding this incident, the fraternity obviously took things too far, BUT Blacks did not create hip-hop culture as we know it...people only *think* we did.  Nah, man, this 'culture' was hatched on Madison Avenue (maybe not specifically there, but you know what I mean) and all the creators did was to stick a black face on it because it seemed most appropriate.  And since that day, my people have seen fit to prove them right time-after-time.

 Special'TellingitLikeitIs'Ed spoke the GOSPEL truth!

The thing is even TheBlockHead has pointed out so many time is that Oprah, Barack Obama, Con Rice, Colin Powell, Tiger Woods are all considered 'jokes' and 'sell outs' and 'Uncle Toms' in the mainstream black community while Lil Kim and Trina and Flava Flave and Al Pacino's character in the movie 'Scarface' and 50 are considered HEROS!

It is their own beliefe system that keep them down...not 'The Man' or 'Whitey' it's them and HIP HOP culture and the 'HIP HOP lifestyle' that force them to believe that it is COOLER to wear overblown giant white t-shirts and bling and deal drugs and get spinners and ho's and a pitbull.

 What do I know...I'm a racist though I heard.
