I am surprised this was a Planet Fitness.  Years ago I was in a st. louis location and it was the sleaziest gym I have seen.  No chicks and all dudes jacked up screaming and yelling.  Throwing F-Bombs everywhere. 2 treadmills and thats it.   Very cool gym.  Don't know about now.  This was 10 years ago.

All joking aside..  As a gym owner myself, I find myself replacing 100s of $$$ every week on broken dumbbells and other things.. But that's part of the biz and I don't mind at all..  I found a way to make everybody happy, the hardcore guys and the old ladies..  It's called a 4' concrete wall to separate them..

Thirty years ago, men and women had separate workout facilities.  Now I know that is highly controversial, discriminatory, and downright oppressive, but men could workout without worrying about offending someone while supporting over twice their bodyweight on their shoulders while repping out on squats, and women could train without being self-conscience of men watching them.

But, of course, we are now much more advanced and understand that equality and decency in the weightroom is much more important than the workout itself.

Jeez, we used to yell to psyche up for lifts, and during sets.  I have no idea what the hell this crap is about...

Uh, okay.  Those two clowns primarily train women, and they do alot of yelling and screaming.   I guess yelling during aerobics class and going through a Nautilus legs cycle (or power cleaning your bodyweight for over 20 reps) is pretty much all the same, right bro?

To each his/her own.

Anyone interested in sustaining revenue from a hardcore gym might find that works: separate part of it into hardcore then pay the bills with geeks.

I read an article about a guy in Norway that got kicked out of a gym by some fatass gym manager for being 'to big' Well this guy just happened to be a bouncer at a nightclub and the fatass girl that kicked him out of the gym happened to go to just that night club one night. When the girl was about to go in to the night club the bouncer stopped her and said 'no you cant come in'. She probably didn't recognise him and asked why. He just said 'you're to big'.

Karma is a bitch huh  8)

Planet Fitness wanted to address a potential issue that pushed away certain members.  I can understand that...but they went way too far and they should loosen their policies or collapse as a business.  Lifting weights is a physical activity, its not easy, and not supposed to be all fun and frilly.  F-cking ridiculous.  Now, if they said they won't tolerate excessive grunting, throwing weights, improper handling of equipment, that seems more reasonable.  The problem is they are so large that they are spreading everywhere and making smaller gyms close!  That leaves less options for us.

The lunk alarm and someone yelling at this guy for a grunt while squatting is utterly f'n ridiculous.

Is there a web address to email?  We should all respond to this so they get more negative press.

You guys really have no idea that Planet Fitness is one of the most rapidly expanding gyms because they appeal to the majority of the population...I managed a Planet Fitness before in two different states and trust me they do very well...On a few good months we would sign up 300 to 500 people per month and I am not kidding...I personally worked out at another gym while I worked there though...Their rules are put up plain as day where everyone can see them...Trust me they are not going to change they are making a ton of money...

I have a very good idea, re-read my post.  It is so successful that local gyms close.  Its just that they went too extreme with the responce to the issues.
There's no reason they can't separate off a room for heavy lifting.  Just like many gyms did with a women's only room!

Their extreme attitude goes against the physical nature of muscle building.  No matter what kind of pretty signs there are, weights are there to build muscle and if you do it correctly, it is an intense activity.

This offends both men and women who are trying to lift hard for results!

I'm also tired of all the masculine bashing in our current culture.  Everyone else stands up for their rights, we need to as well.

BOYCOT PLANETFITNESS!

Well lol, you keep yelling until you get blue in the face it is your right and I don't agree with all of planet fitness rules, but they are a private club and do reserve the right to set certain rules for their members and they are doing quite well with it...They are right now the most rapidly growing gym chain out there...They won't be around forever just like all the other rapid growing gym chains...The fitness field constantly goes in fads decade to decade...I workout in a hole in the wall gym that is 24hours a day because I can get the job done...I don't need a bunch of people around me and what not...A true bodybuilder and powerlifter wouldn't even worry himself about planet fitness lol...

According to this Associated Press article, they expel someone about every 2 weeks for grunting or dropping weights -interpreted by Planet Fitness as "trying to show how strong you are"..

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Some gyms forbid hogging machines and or wearing flip flops. At one gym, grunting is grounds for expulsion. Albert Argibay of Beacon, N.Y. was escorted by police officers from a gym this week for grunting _ which is against Planet Fitness' rules for maintaining a non-intimidating atmosphere.

Its rules, posted around the gym, state members cannot wear bandanas, grunt or bang weights on the ground. When an offender is spotted, a "lunk alarm" sounds to warn the member.

Across its locations nationwide, there is at least one expulsion every two weeks, said Mike Grondahl, CEO of Planet Fitness. He said grunting and dropping weights are the most common offenses.

"When somebody's in there and they grunt and they grunt loud, it's trying to bring attention to themselves to show everyone how strong they are," Grondahl said.

Argibay emitted the offending grunt Monday evening, a peak time for gyms, said Carol Palazzolo, the gym's general manager. She said she heard it from across the room, even though "the place was a zoo."

"He was looking directly at me and he did it four times," she said. "I'm not a doctor, but as far as I know, a grunt is a noise that comes out of one's body that is loud and is intimidating."

An argument ensued when she confronted him, and the police were called. Argibay was escorted out, but no charges were filed.

"It's an embarrassing situation to be in, over a grunt," Argibay said.

Most clubs have policies regarding proper gym manners, although expulsions are rare, said Brooke Correia, spokeswoman for the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association.

Grunting might be more taboo in gyms like Planet Fitness, which cater to exercise novices, Correia said.

The heaviest dumb bells at Planet Fitness are 80 pounds, meaning it's a place geared toward the general public, Palazzolo said.

She didn't know if Argibay was a chronic offender _ he'd only been a member since Sept. 27. But it was the first time she kicked a member out for grunting.

"I don't know the reason behind grunting or not grunting. But if you need to grunt, you may go and join another gym," she said.
