If you have some sort of shoulder injury, even hitting the bag properly will aggravate it.

Shoulder injuries are a bear to heal, because it's almost impossible to totally rest the area.

most people i train with rarely hit the heavy bag at 100% to save wear and tear on their joints. which is fine and good but you still need to train at 100% or else when you finally hit something full blast you will kill your shoulders and wrists

straights, jabs, and crosses...even upper cuts don't bother it..it's all hooks that kill my shoulder. and that's my theory behind it..i want to train how i'm going to fight.  Tapping and snapping the bag will only make me do the same in a fight! sorry but i don't think so scooter!

I had the same problem when throwing left hooks.  Someone suggest to me to get a shoulder horn.  I didn't want to spend the money (around $60), so I did the exercise as best I could without it.  I held my upper arms parallel to the floor with my hands down holding a dumbbell and rotated my forearms upward while keeping my upper arms still.  I started off with 5 lbs. dumbbells.  It helped.

you have to walk before you can run, id imagine your bodymechanics are out of wak and beating the bag as hard as you can wont fix that

if you wanna be a brawler just mug the bag, if you want to be a striker learn to tap and snap

to see the difference watch wanderlei and mirko go at it ;)

Use real heavy bag training gloves when hitting the heavy bag.  Do a search for the  Ringside site and see what I mean.  Hitting a bag all the time with a bare fist or with cheap speed bag gloves will catch up with you.  Another point is a lot of heavy bags in gyms should be thrown in the garbage.  Heavy bags after awhile start getting rock hard from repeated punches.  Hitting a rock hard bag with thin gloves will destroy your shoulders, wrist and hands.

BJ has a huge heavy bag at the gym.  It is filled with 300 lbs of rice.

If you have ever been in a gym with a 15 to 20 year old bag you would know what I mean.  It could destroy you body in one session if you hit it for a couple of rounds.

your shoulder is going to hurt if you have nagging injuries, don't dig so hard when throwing the hook, or learn to double up with less then full power.  It might not be as irritated after your body becomes accustomed to the impact that punch places on your shoulder joint.
