LOS ANGELES -- Pop singer Britney Spears has filed for divorce from husband Kevin Federline, Los Angeles County Superior Court spokeswoman Kathy Roberts has confirmed.
Celebrity news Web site TMZ.com first reported the filing and obtained the legal papers filed by Spears.
The singer cited "irreconcilable differences" in the petition and is asking for both "legal and physical custody" of the couple's two children, 1-year old Sean Preston and 2-month-old Jayden James.
Sources have told TMZ that the couple, who married in 2004, has an "iron-clad pre-nup."
Authorities said that the petition was filed Tuesday, a day Spears made a surprise appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman."
According to TMZ, Spears has hired celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser for her case. Wasser has represented the likes of Angelina Jolie and Nick Lachey, TMZ said.
Spears' marriage to Federline is her second. Spears, 24, married Federline, 28, eight months after ending a 55-hour Las Vegas marriage to her childhood friend, Jason Alexander, in January 2004.
Before her marriages, Spears was in a long-term relationship with fellow singer Justin Timberlake. Federline was previously involved in a relationship with actress Shar Jackson. Federline and Jackson had two children together.
Spears' marriage to Federline has provided endless fodder for tabloids, which have speculated frequently that the union was in trouble.
Spears' lawyer and Federline's representatives have not returned calls for comment. There are no statements on Spears' Web site, which is being revamped, or Federline's about the divorce.
