I thought George Washington WAS born in the US? I know his ancestors were English but I'm pretty sure he was born in Virginia? 
George Washington and his parents were born British subjects, although they were born within what would become known as the US . . . as were Adams, Jefferson, Madison. I'm almost certain Monroe was too.
Hiram Revels made it to the senate despite not having met the citizenship requirements (he was a black man from the South--wouldn't have been considered a citizen until after the civil war).
