A British Airways (BA) employee has lost her fight to openly wear a cross necklace at work at Heathrow.
Nadia Eweida, 55, of Twickenham, has been on unpaid leave since her bosses told her she could not visibly wear her cross at the check-in counter.

She lost her appeal against the decision by BA when she met with the airline bosses on Monday morning.

BA denied it had banned the wearing of crosses and said Ms Eweida had a right to a second appeal.

It said its uniform policy stated that such items could be worn if concealed underneath the uniform.

Nadia Eweida said she was effectively "forced" to take unpaid leave after refusing to conceal the symbol.

Ms Eweida said during Monday's meeting British Airways told her it respected her faith and accepted the cross was not jewellery, but would be standing by its original decision.

She added: "I am fairly disappointed but I'm looking forward to the next stage because the cross is important and the truth will be revealed.

"It is important to wear it to express my faith so that other people will know that Jesus loves them."

Ms Eweida said people of other faiths were allowed to wear visible religious symbols such as headscarves and she wanted to be allowed to do the same.

Fair enough I say - can't have one rule for the muzzies and another rule for every other religion. Get rid of the lot I say.

Oh brother....... Confirm with the rules of your job. They let you wear the cross just not in the open. It has nothing to do with hating your religion it has to do with a company making the decision on what there uniforms should be, how they should be worn and how one should appear when taking checks from them. If you do not like it get a new job lady. People are such morons.

What truth is going to be revealed? That she is causing trouble for no reason? Clearly she is going to lose the second appeal. I bet she runs of crying that the airline is full of devil worshippers. Hmmm, maybe she can get a job where she can make her own rules.

I wonder how she would react if a devil worshipper wore his religious pendants out in the open. Most likely call for a ban I would suspect

Wasn't there some shit about shiks in airports being allowed to keep on them a small dagger or something along those lines, as it was their religious duty?

As much as it pains me to do... I have to side with Body88's opinion on this.

I was all in her corner, until I read the part about her feeling the need to show the cross so people will know that Jesus loves her. This appears to me to be more about proselytzing than it is personal devotion.

If other employees are allowed to wear religious symbols out in the open then she should be allowed to do the same, period. If she isn't than no one is.

Classic example of favoritism and anti-chistianism.

Yeah, I hate the fact that she wants everyone to see it so they know Jesus loves them or whatever bs but it doesn't matter. That's the idea. Whatever it means to her that's fine as long as the rules are the same for everyone.

It didn't pain me to agree with YOU, it pained me to take a position that hints at the restriction of religious freedom. I'm all for religious freedom, and I think people should be able to believe whatever they want without being persecuted for it. I also believe people's religious freedoms should be respected. I think it's a slippery slope we climb when we dictate that a person should keep their religion hidden, because to demand that would infringe upon those who due to their particular religion are unable to do so ie: Jews wearing yarmulke's & headscarves, Sikhs & turbans, Muslims & burkas, or face veils etc. However my impression is that the intent of this woman is not about winning the freedom of religion, but rather having the freedom to proselytize her religion on the job. It not only goes against her employers uniform code, it goes against the dictates of her own religion. The Christian bible tell us to worship in secret, not to do so in men's eyes. It appears to me, that is what she's looking to do, ...in which case, I gotta say keep the cross under your shirt honey, ...or find another job.

doesn't seem to me that she's worshipping/praying as she works . . . merely identifying herself as Christian . . . same kind of thing that American politicians do with their little american flag lapel and tie pins.

It's a question of degree . . . a tiny cross is not a problem. Something that prevents identification when necessary, or that could be a weapon (sikh dagger) is a problem that most reasonable people can see.

there's no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
