It depends on the magazine and your place in it.

I have a feeling the Weider guys are salaried.

Most other mags employ a few writers but are open to free lancers like myself. Free lancers generally have jobs (including writing) outside of the magazine(s) they write for.

I suspect Ron Harris is one guy who actually does well writing for the magazines, as he writes for so many of them and is so prolific within each.

Being a free lance writer (for MuscleMag) means I get paid by the piece. Sometimes the pieces are solicited (meaning my editors ask me to pursue an article) but usually I stumble upon something, think readers might like it, and send it in, wait to hear from my editors.

I'm not comfortable saying how much I get paid per piece, but let's just say it is a nice supplement to my salary as a high school teacher.

Sometimes the salary is low, but the chance to "Network" could prove very valuable

I know one of the main mags pays around $400 per piece.  I'm sure the rates are similar all around.  If you do enough pieces, yes it would be a good supplement.  At that right, I would like to do two pieces a month to major mags to supplement my website income.  Renting out my house to friends paid the same amount over a year and wasn't worth it at all.

Art directors, editorial staff, prob get paid in the industry ballpark.  Partially depends on prestige of the mag, circ., etc. As far as freelance goes, submission guidelines are sometimes available on the net, but usually not for major mags. The easiest thing to do is run over to your nearest bookstore and get your hands on a "writer's market." (Big, fat book.) Freelance rates for most US/Can mags are listed therein as well as which of the mag's editor(s) to contact with your query letter. If you have experience you can get away with just sending a query and some examples of your work, however, if you're a newb, you're better off actually writing the article on spec and sending at least 1/3 of it with your query letter.  Sometimes you can actually get through to someone on the phone, but hardly likely. Most editors have a wall o' voodoo between them and outsiders.

it might be helpful to know that "freelance" is one word, especially when you're using it to describe your own occupation.
