To be a bodybuilder or to look like you train?
« on: November 20, 2006, 05:10:26 PM »

so when can we say someone starts to look like a bodybuiler or like he's training

does he as to look like VINCE :-\
look like TA  :(
look like ALEXXX  or WHATEVA :)
like LEE PRIEST  :D
Does a guy with with 15, 16 inch arms (with proportion) will be like one

Why i'm asking that: well, i've been looking at a lot of pictures lately here and on the net, man why someone that look average or look like a swimmer can call himself a bodybuilder, kids with massive 14 inch arms walking around like they are arnold after a month of gym, a guy who looks fat, too skinny, you name it..... man i just don't get it
i mean if you put picture of yourself, you should look like your training, right?

so what is it guys, whats the look we are looking for here
are you delusional?

I think someone is only a bodybuilder if they live the bodybuilding lifestyle. Some of these guys who don't have much of a physique at the moment have something in common with those who do. And that's the passion we share for bodybuilding.

i agree with you here, but what about someone who's been training 2 years and more and have nothing to show?

Well then, they don't have much of a passion at all because they must be doing something very wrong!

Yes exactly.  A bodybuilder is not someone who simply lifts weights.  Dieting added does not makeyou a bodybuilder either.  You have to compete against others to be a bodybuilder.  You can lifts weights, diet, take roids and still not be a bodybuilder.  Competition is what separates it.  Vince competes but does not lift weights or diets.  If he does, he does incorrectly and not very good at it.

But to say a guy is a bodybuilder because he lifts weights and eats good is not correct.

I agree. But then you get to the term itself. "Bodybuilder".... Does that qualify anyone who builds there body? If you use that argument you could say gymnests are bodybuilders. Same with any activity that causes the muscle to become larger. Swimming, biking etc etc.

I guess Onlyme is right. To be a true "bodybuilder" you have to compete.

I competed before and I don't really consider myself a bodybuilder cause I don't look like one.

I'll be a bodybuilder when I'll hit 220 shredded onstage !  8)

Nope... If you are 200 and shredded you are the real deal. That is big on anyone under 6 feet. 200 lbs of pure muscle at about 5'10 is huge. It is not huge for the sideshow attractions called boybuilders these days. But it is def respectable. Dont listen to the idiots.

I don't agree with that. Victor Richards only competed a couple of times. He didn't really like competing. If he never stepped onstage at all, would you actually say he wasn't a bodybuilder?
I think if you train the way a bodybuilder trains (separating bodyparts, resting between sets, etc.) and your physique takes on a certain appearance, then you are a bodybuilder. You may be a recreational bodybuilder and not a competitive one, but a bodybuilder nevertheless.

He competed though.  Your body will take on a certain appearance if you lift weight.  I have friends who really haven't ever lifted weights and they have jsut a good a body as someone at the same weight who does lift weights.  And yes true a recreational bodybuilder and competitive bodybuilder are different but in some ways the same.  Nowadays most major sports, the guys are lifting wieghts.  Cross training is big now.  It wasn't like that 20 years ago or so.  But in reality competition is what separates a true athlete and a person who just does it to do it.  Just because I play golf or go bowling does not make me a bowler.  I think in order to be something you have to live the lifestyle fully.  Not part time or on weekends.  It is something you do all the time.

I know cause I eat all the time so I am an EATER

If you are lifting weights to shape and sculpt your physique then you are a bodybuilder. If you compete you are an amateur or professional bodybuilder. If you type on the internet all day long and slouch on the couch then you are a buttbuilder. :D
just push some weight!

well I am about 5'10 - 5'11 at best and about 215 at 10 % bf
my clavicules are fucking wide so my frame isn't really filled out and I don't have that "bodybuilder look" with the round shoulders and arms yet.

You are in the begining stages of bodywisdom. Once you master it you may call yourself a bodybuilder. 8)

That's not what I meant. I typed nothing about competition because I don't believe one must compete in order to be considered a bodybuilder.

A bodybuiler is simply a person who puts himself through the process of developing the musculature of his body through specific types of dieting and exercise. And he doesn't have to display his development on stage to be considered someone who builds his body.

TA has a pretty typical body of a guy who works out but doesn't juice.
