Is Chuck Liddell overrated?
« on: December 03, 2006, 05:17:33 PM »
I'm sure you've all seen this but I'll post it again anyway since it's relevant to the topic.

I feel after watching a lot of his fights that Chuck's defense is relatively weak when it comes to standup. His punches are just weird. lol.
I rarely seen anyone coming at him aggresively with strikes because everyone is afraid to trade with him. In otherwords, they give him too much respect. Notice Jackson, the one guy to charge in on him strong and keep on him, was able to beat him handily. I think Chuck really needs to make a rematch happen (maybe rampage can sign with UFC and generate some much needed excitement) to silence the doubters.

Losing one fight does not make u overrated -
I would like to see Chuck fight Wandy or Shogun before he hits 40

He fights the same guys over and over though.

We know he can beat Tito...

He takes a step in Pride and gets beat badly by a mid-level contender.
I think he demonstrated very weak standup defense.

I honestly think Tito is going to beat him this time, unless Chuck pokes him in the eye again.  I really think Tito is going to go back to his old style of boring Lnp to beat Chuck.

I like Tito if it goes past 3. And yes, Chuck is a little overrated imo, but I like to watch him fight.

yes he is very overrated

knocking out over the hill couture does not make you great, if randy was the same guy he woudn't have retired

knockling out tito also deosn't mean shit because he is the most overrated fighter in the history of mma and he was an idiot for playing to chuck's strenght (standup)

If he can avoid the thumbs.  I think Tito has a chance of TKOing Chack if he takes him into rounds four or five.  Most people chase Chack.  He is a decent counterpuncher who throws punches from weird angles.  He leads off with a doubled up hook.  His overhand is out of nowhere, and takes some time getting there.  He sets people up nicely, and has decent low line kicks.  Not to mention he is the best at cage walking.  Add this, his sprawl defense, and the aformentioned thumbs, and you have a good UFC fighter.

In the ring, where he can't back up into the cage, (ring ropes seperate, and give) to clinch (to prevent the takedown), Liddell isn't as effective.  Tito also isn't as effective when he cant put someone's head up against the cage so he won't have to pass, and drop elbows down.  I'd love to see Wandy and Chack fight in the UFC but in Japan.  No athletic commision, allowing kicks to a downed opponent.  This takes away a decided advantage of grappling based fighters.  They can't hang on to the single if your opponent is stomping on your head.  As is the use of the knees on a shooting opponent.  Vov used this to great degree against Kerr, Coleman against Goeas.

Chack hasn't fought a good striker yet.

He fought a supposedly average-good striker in the form of Q.Jackson and was rolled over. Makes me wonder what his kickboxing record is.

Chack isn't a pure kickboxer.  He is actually a better wrestler.  He wrestled D1 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  He is a decent striker, great wrestler, decent Jits guy with HEAVY hands, and an iron chin.  If he hits you, it is lights out.

Tito won't be able to take him down. Randy couldn't. You have to strike some with him to set up the takedowns, and that's when he'll eyepoke when being backed up and KO him.

Rampage is a shadow of his former self right now, while Chuck has improved.

everybody says chuck has improved, how so what is everybody basing that on?

just because he won all his fights against mediocre competition since getting embarrassed by rampage doesn't mean he is any better now

lets see how he does against somebody who isn't primarily a wrestler

if it goes to standup the Tito will be sleeping before the end of round noe. If he can somehow manage to get on him and lay the GnP on him, i think he will knock him out. Chuck does seem to leave himself wide open but he gets the job done. The only way to silence the doubters would be to fight, and beat, Jackson but even then its a no win situation. Rampage has been labelled over the hill more than once recently, and it is fair to say hes passed his best.

Is he overrated? Well he is the UFC LHW champion - possibly the most dominant -  with a great fighting record. He has immense knockout power in everything he can use to hit someone but he does have his flaws, its getting yourself into a position where you can manipulate them that matters and not many people have managed that. The real test comes when he looks opposite and sees Wanderlei Silva standing there. Then we will see who is the best

I would love to see him fight Shogun.  Styles makes fights, and Shogun's style matches up well against Chack.  Wandy throws too loopy punches.  He would be open to an overhand right, or a hook from Chack.  Not to mention in a cage, Chack can use the cage to intiate the clinch, at which point he normally pushes off and gets back at range.  In Pride rules, with kicking a downed opponent, Wandy is a different animal.

We tend to grandize all champions into something we want them to be.  Chuck is no different.  I think Tito takes it to him and we get a new champion.  Then we can begin questioning Tito.

Tito has alot better chance now since he won't be the agressor on stand up, which we all know is stupid since Chuck is the best counter-puncher in mma and this plays into his only game plan.  This fight will play out to be boring as hell with fans booing as they did Arlovski/Silvia and it will be a chess match until one of them gets caught!  Call me fuggin' nuts but if it goes a couple of rounds Titos cardio (which sucked in the Griffin fight) could dominate Chucks thus making him vulnerable to take downs.  I know this is a far stretch but it could happen.  Time will tell...

Tito has to stay away and take Chack into the later rounds, if this happens, you will see a UD or a TKO.

I think you're right about that....

Scimowser made some good points as well.

Chuck is the best counter-puncher in mma

I'd call that a gross overstatement.

Yeah Chuck puts on exciting fights. I like watching him. I understand the importance of ground fighting, but I think everyone likes to see at least one good striking match.

Ditto on Sylvia. That guy is just boring.  ;D

Chuck would have a puncher's chance against Fedor. CroCop busted up Fedor a bit when they fought.

Fedor is the baddest man on the planet, but he would come right at Chuck and it would be a slugfest with neither one looking to take it to the ground. I'd love to see it just once...
