Ferrari 288 GTO versus F40

Ferrari 288 GTO and the F40, both relying on small displacement V8's that were turbo-charged. They were answers to the Porsche 959, arguably the pinnacle of 911 develop. Both were reworked designs (more aggressive) of the 308-328 GTB's.

I love the f40. Pure racecar. It is not intended to be posh and comfortable! I think it is the greatest Ferrari ever.

I love the GTO. It looks beautiful, it performed (for its day) and it was EXCEPTIONALLY RARE and expensive. 

If I remember correctly the GTO was released to customers a few years before the 959 so the GTO wasn't built to compete with the Porsche. The 959 raced Rally, I don't think Ferrari ever raced Rally. I might be wrong regarding that though. The F40 was more a contemporary and competitor of the 959 than the GTO was.

The F40 was spectacular, a better performing car than the GTO but something about the looks of the GTO just does it for me.

When I was a kid there was a Ferrari dealer in Cohasset, Massachusetts right on Rte. 3A that had a GTO in the showroom. I used to go and drool over it once a month. There was a Maserati dealership across the street too, that was a cool street for a kid.

I believe right after Enzo died GTO's were trading for $1,000,000. I think they're selling for around $500,000 now, but they come on the market so rarely who knows.


This is the basis for the road going 959 that was sold to the public.

That car makes me weak at the knees.

Take a look at the Corvette ZO6, for the money it embarrasses just about any Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche. Best damn bang for the buck. Plus, it is its class winner at Le Mans (multiple times), Don't sleep on the Vette, because finally GM is putting money into it...

But I would take a F430 any day ;D

For the most part you are correct. There is one car that is still a Ferrari killer. Still will manhandle any euro supercar besides anything less than a few of the finest supercars in the world(these cars also cost 4 to 9 times what this one does). That is the gt my friend! My favorite car.

If I remember correctly, the 959 was first seen as a concept at the 1983 or 84 Auto show (geneva?) People were handing blank checks. Prosche said it would come out in 85. Well, Porsche didn't expect the rising costs of all the tech in the car (water cooled Flat 6,loosely based on the 962 race car, AWD,adjustable dampers, Twin turbo---one small, one large). And it came out in 87. Well Ferrari scrambled and maed the 288 GT0, in what 85? Notice how it has a small displacement V8 that is turbo charged, as that was all th rage back then. Plus the F1 engines had turbos---Ferraris' connection to F1.
Notice how the 288 GTO design is based on the 308/328, just more butch. Which suggests Ferrari was trying to hurry to get the GTO to production before the 959.

Oh boy, the Z06 is a cheap plastic bomber. May be fast, but it cannot touch the prestige and feeling of driving a Lamboghini Murcielago or a Maserati.

I agree that the GT is a great car, i love the Ford Mustang as well. There are good cars in the States, but if you compare them to the european creme de la creme, they are just plain plastic shit.  ;D

I was not comparing mustangs to euro cars (where was that in my post). I do not even like mustangs. Everyone knows I am a huge fan of euro cars. I was also comparing the performance of the zo6 to the other exotics, not the quality.


You are 100 percent wrong about the GT. First off, The body of the gt is constructed from lightweight aluminums. Just like on a Ferrari 430 or Maserati. Clarkson (a known American car hater) called it one of the greatest cars ever.He also gave it rave reviews in the driving tests. Just like all the other reviews it got in the exotic world. Magazines, top gear, drivers etc etc. Clarkson also used the gt for his pick in the " greatest supercar in the world challenge" against the zonda and 430.

The statement you made about the GT proves you do not know much about exotics. I would bet you have never seen or driven in one.  Build quality, performance and use of modern material is all very good on the GT. With the exception of the enzo (which cost 10 times what the gt does) there is no car you listed can touch a gt. GT's eat murcialagos and 430's for breakfast. Way faster.The body on the zo6 is "plastic and cheap. Not the gt.

I am a huge fan off euro cars. The gt gets respect, because true exotic fans recognize it is a marvel of a car. Whether they like domestics or not.

The z06 is "plastic" and cheap. Not the gt.





Actually the Zo6 has extensive use of carbon fiber, unlike the last Zo6. Where the Zo6 falls short is the interior. That is what makes the diff. Just like the Murci's downfall is its AWD chassis. Its too big and bulky

Watch the top gear review of the zo6. Go to the part where Jeremy shows how flimsy the rear quarters and bumper are on the zo6. Having seen one up close it is true. The thing is fast as hell but is lacking on quality.

But like you said. Nothing can touch it for cost to performance. It is a good car.

These are all the times. Keep in mind the ccx has 800 horse. Most the entire top 10 is 600 plus horse, and half a million plus. The gt is a beast. Top speed on the gt is faster than all but the ccx and f1 zonda. Look at the little atom in there, lol. 20 grand and faster than 600,000 ultra exotics.

The GTO went to market in 84 a full 3 years before the 959. That is an eternity in the automobile market. The GTO was Ferrari's first real attempt at a Supercar. The F40 was next step.

If you want to really go back the 959 in racing trim was around since 81 or so but that doesn't mean it was a car anyone could walk into a Porsche dealer and buy. It was designed and built to race rally. Back then road going 4 wheel drive sports cars didn't exist.

The F40 and the 959 were competitors, the GTO and the 959 weren't.

Thanks for clearing this up....or was I too lazy to look this up myself. And as I think of it, ti would make sense for the F40 and 959 to be rivals, whereas the 911 Turbo and the 288 GTO were rivals.
