64=65??

found this and thought it was interesting


anybody have an explanation....im no math wizard

It actually doesn't equal 65.  If you rearrange the triangles you get a parallelogram.  when you actually put it together there is a gap between the triangles with an area of 1.  this deviation is the cause for the 65.

8x8=64....5x13=65

8x8=64....plus the one giant square that holds all of the squares, total 65.

i discovered this during math time in elementary school and it blew my mind.

the gap lies in the borders inside the parralelagram.  If you actually redraw ti or better make cut out and rearrange them there is a gap.  The illusion works becuase the fact that the lineed interior borders are in place and hide the gap.  It can be disproven mathematicaly

at the very top of the second rectangle former(the 65 one) you can see its missing a couple of pixels (ie the right side corner is higher than hte left side corner) ... this is where the missing 1 went
