The Definition of Super Group
« on: December 16, 2006, 04:04:28 AM »
I've touched on it before...

But it can never be too much of it...

Highwaymen was the epithome of a supergroup:

Willie - the criminal one

Kris - the handsome one

Waylon - the bad ass one

Johnny - the Legend himself

Awesome vid, Silver Stallion (notice how they've just put Kris on the spot to be good-looking):

Live version of Highwayman (listen for the differences in crowd reactions, Kris get the ladies, Waylon the guys, et al):

Me and Bobby McGee:

I'll throw in a bonus track as well, "Jackson", with the First Family of Country, June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash:

The first super group I remember was Blind Faith.  Members of famous bands that various members drooped out of and formed their own band, thus the super group.  CSN&Y were another I remember.  Now you get allot of different band members touring, but they never stay and form a super group.  Super Sessions was close with Al Cooper and Mike Bloomfield, but Bloomfield was too far gone and Steven Stills came on board to try to replace him, but just for 2 albums, both live.  Now gone.   The Traveling Wilburys were one also, but 1 or 2 recordings and splitsville, not to mention death.

Blind Faith made one decent album. I think the leader of the band must have been Winwood. Too bad Roy Orbison passed away.

Winwood and Clapton were the two who formed the band.  They didn't want Ginger Baker, but when he showed, no one had the balls to tell him they wanted something different than Cream.  Baker seemed to know what they wanted and played down which was good enough.  Rick Gretch, a British sessions man was added on bass after many auditions.

Blind Faith recently came out with a double CD.  The original album plus 4 jams.  The jamming is awsum.  No vocals just very jazzy, bluesy rock, buy the best young musicians of the day.  A keeper.

Ginger Baker was old in the 1960's!
