Make Football better?
« on: December 17, 2006, 11:24:29 AM »
Why don't they change the rules of Football so that they drop the ball in the center of the field, with each team standing 5 yards back.  First team to grab the ball and get it to the other side wins.  Plus allow the ball to be dropped and picked up by the other team and vise versa till one side gets a touchdown.

Maybe even throw in plastic baseball bats to beat the other team with?

Restructure the leagues so there's relegation for the shit teams and promotion for a club that wins the lower league.

Cut down on all those fucking breaks in play

That's called Rugby, from whence came football.

It IS true that there are too many stoppages leading to commercials now in the NFL. It's getting to be too much when they come back from commerical, do the kickoff, then go back to more commercials.

Too many TV timeouts. Fucking ridiculous these days.

If I hear one more John Mellencamp truck commerical, I'm going to gouge my eyes out with a pair of pliers. >:(

Being molested by Michael Jackson is more of a sport than american football.

The guys are top draw athletes, but the adverts and constant breaks fucking ruin the whole "sport" element of it.

I've played both. From a north american perspective football's much more interesting EXCEPT for the excessive commercialization.

Of course there are pros and cons. Rugby's continuous which can be good, then again the stoppages reflect a greater planning of plays in football that can be more interesting, as is the forward pass that Rugby never got to. Note the streamlined football, that can be thrown forward vs. the balloon version still used in Rugby.

They should make them play without pads and protective gear - then we'll see how many times they "high five" each other in the course of a game.

I'd like to see the pitch perhaps 5 meters more narrow, and 7 meters shorter.

Cut down the amount of players to 9 in total. Make the goals slightly bigger, perhaps 4 inches wider and two inches higher.

Also cut down the matches from 2*45  to 2*40. That way it the intensity will increase and there will be more goals.

It's all about making the game of football a joga bonito, so teams like those homos Greece can never win another Euro. >:(

The NFL is the most profitable sports league in the world now. I love Rugby and am even thinking of playing it but it doesn't compare to football. Sure there's no pads, but the players are nowhere near the athletic calibre of the NFL players. Don't even argue it, there are no 250 pound rugby players benching 500 and running 4.5 40's.

The NFL sure does have some impressive athletes. But rugby to me just flows so much better. Esp the big international games.

I bet big competition international games in American football are non-existant.

When I was a kid we sorta invented a game like that.We called it "Fumble". We started by throwing the ball straight up in the air and then it was a free for all.You were not allowed to be tackled with the ball, once someone was about to tackle you you just threw the ball  away before they got ya down then everyone beat the shit out of each other going after it. The object was still the same ,get the ball to your end zone. The only time the ball wasn't live was after a score or if someone got tackled without get'n rid of the ball.In each case it was back to the center and another throw straight up.....there was never any automatic get the ball after the other team scored,it was always a free for all for the ball.Sounds dumb maybe but we had a blast playing it.

I played that as a kid. We called it "kill the man with the ball".

Football has evolved away from Rugby; in the early 20th century there wasn't much equipment (leather helmets), alot more running & there were less stoppages; more similar to Rugby than now.

The Canadian version of football is a little more fluid than the American version, has less stoppages & less commercials. A little more emphasis on kicking, holding on to the Rugby influence using a wider ball closer to a Rugby ball that's easier to kick. Field's wider too. The American college version's also a little less static.

That drop-kick by the Patriots last season was a throwback to Rugby, was right out of the Canadian Football League where it's a little more common. That's where Flutie came up with it.
