It can happen to the best. Which is why false grip is banned in most PL feds.

I never benched any other way than thumbless.  This guy obviously has no idea how to do it.  I like hwo the people on here who have no idea about heavy benching will always point out about the bar slipping out with a thumbless grip.  And I have to say, do you think if a bar with 315 or 600+ slips out of a regular grip your thumb will save it.  PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE.  That makes me laugh everytime.  I have seen way more people lose it with a regualr grip than with a thumbless.

But why is that grip banned by PL orgs on the grounds of safety then?

I don't bench thumbless, used to but never had it slip. Not going thumbless at least feels more secure though, felt safer when I did in excess of 500lbs.

I had a slip using a thumbless on incline bench. Was doing 225 for reps but looking to squeeze out 1-2 forced reps so I asked one of the trainers in the gym for a spot. Foolishly I let him give me a lift. He lifted the bar and with my thumbless grip, proceeded to push it so far in front of me that the bar just rolled right off my hand and THUMP on my chest just like the guy in the video.

I learned my lessons: No more thumbless grips, no more asking 17 year olds for spots, and no more lift-offs.

wow, i really never thought of that possibility, personally i dont favor a lift off, but hearing that even tho i use a full grip sounds like a super common scenario

i have probably average sized hands with short fingers so i prefer a standard full grip... i can see how someone with super large hands would feel more comfortable with a partial grip, but the reality is that there is no real benefit, however IMO even the slight possibility of a slip is enough reason to revamp your form, seriously this is a question to anyone who uses a partial grip... WHY? whast the advantage

So do you think with thumbs you could have held that weight no problem.  Again I find it funny how people can't do this right.  I will be a hard to convinve that thumbless is bad since I have been heavy since 1974.  It's the way I taught and the only way I have ever done any kind of exrcise like that.  EVen military or BNP.  I do hold the dumbells with my thumb but only because most of the time if I don't my hands are so big I have to squeeze them in and they feel weird.

You're probably right about me not being able to handle the bar, but I could have at least held onto it when it came down and lessened the impact. As opposed to it being pushed right off my palms, in which case I never had a chance. Fortunately, thanks to my mountains of ebony muscle, the weight didn't do any damage when it slammed into my chest.

If you still don't quite understand how this happened, I will be in Hawaii in March to give you a bad spot so you can see for yourself.

I've seen that happen to more than one guy who took a thumbless pressing grip on a bent bar which turned in hand.

Why do a grip without thumbs?  Do some people find it more comfortable?
It hasn't helped...

Yeah I really dont see the reason to not use your thumbs to grip the bar on pushing movements.  The thumbs just help you keep the bar balanced in your hand and yes its safer but thats a whole nother subject, safety yuck!

Some people just pick up bad habits and stay with them.

I understad that a thumbless grip is harder to do if you aren't used to it and then it CAN be dangerous.  But if doen right which I must have been doing now for 30+ years it is great.  And also, I watch when people drop the bar on most occassions and its there wrist that goes forward and the bar drops.  I still don't believe that a bar slipping using a regular grip can be saved with just your thumbs.  I can't see how it can hold 300+ lbs.  But who knows.  All I do know is the thunbless grip is easy once you know how to do it.

For those who don't seem to understand a "thumbless" grip is preferred by guys with small/weak wrists whereby you actually allow your wrists and hands to bend backwards perpendicular to the forearm, and the bar rests on your palms, cupped by your thumbs. As opposed to a normal "overthumb" grip used by guys with big/strong wrists in which the wrist and hand remain in line with the forearm.

With my 6 inch wrists, you know why I preferred the thumbless grip. The thumbless grip also allows one to focus on just the pushing, rather than dealing with the stress on the wrists. Wrist wraps can be a big help when benching heavy with a traditional grip. When I put up 465 in a meet last year, I used wraps with a traditional grip.

i dint think this is true at all...  i have extremely small wrists, (maybe theyre exceptionally strong for their size, but i wouldnt know how to tell) and i prefer a full grip... why? cause its smarter and ive been doing it forever

I understand that a thumbless grip is harder to do if you aren't used to it and then it CAN be dangerous.  But if done right which I must have been doing now for 30+ years it is great.  And also, I watch when people drop the bar on most occasions and its there wrist that goes forward and the bar drops.  I still don't believe that a bar slipping using a regular grip can be saved with just your thumbs.  I can't see how it can hold 300+ lbs.  But who knows.  All I do know is the thunbless grip is easy once you know how to do it.

i think the point ISNT that your thumbs might  NOT be able to hold all the weight... its that they prevent a roll off, and in case you do find the bar falling forward it would be much much easier to prevent it from landing on your neck...

obviously youve been doing it 30+ years without a incident... cause once one slip happend youde immediately realize how wrong you'd been and change your form  ;)...
