I differentiate between: (1) the pwo shake (consumed immediately at the completion of the workout, with the fastest absorbing protein, whey, and the most effective insulin spikers- dextrose and maltodextrin) versus (2) the first meal after the workout (within an hour after completion) where solid food such as a potato, egg whites, chicken breast etc are fine options.

Skip the gummybears unless you're seven.

Simple answer:  Different sugars act differently in the body.
'ose' = sugar - - - lactose, sucrose, glucose, dextrose, etc....

And, check this out, glucose and dextrose are basically synonomous:

"Two isomers of the aldohexose sugars are known as glucose, only one of which (D-glucose) is biologically active. This form (D-glucose) is often referred to as dextrose (dextrose monohydrate), especially in the food industry.. . The mirror-image of the molecule, L-glucose, cannot be used by cells."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dextrose

As such, when we talk about consuming dextrose to spike insulin, you are (chemically speaking) referring to biologically-active glucose (D-glucose).

Yup - I guess I thought that was common knowledge.  The "glucose tablets" that diabetics usually have with them is just hard pressed dextrose.

Do you know if it is possible to get glucose tablets without a prescription?  I currently use dextrose in powdered form.

My kids would be upset and taking them.  I guess I'll stick to powder.
