Egg Nog is the perfect post workout food
« on: December 19, 2006, 04:15:20 PM »
besides the fact that it tastes awesome, it has 8 grams of protein and 20 grams of carbs per 8 ounces, so drink a mere 24 ounces and you've got yourself 25 grams of high quality protein and 60 grams of simple carbs.

Yes, but the only problem would be not drinking the whole container.

What do we know about "perfect post workout food"/drink?

How would egg nog remotely qualify?

This is the nutritional information I found for commerically available regular egg nog (light egg nog is indicated below):

Egg Nog
Nutrition Facts
Serving Size: 1/2 Cup (118mL)
Amount Per Serving
Calories 170 Calories from Fat 80
% Daily Value*
Total Fat 9g 13%
   Saturated Fat 5g 25%
   Trans Fat 0g 0%
Cholesterol 60mg 21%
Sodium 65mg 3%
Total Carbohydrate 19g 6%
Dietary Fiber 0g 0%
Sugars 17g
Protein 4g

Now here is the information for light egg nog:

Nutrition Facts
Serving Size: 1/2 Cup (4 fl oz)
Amount Per Serving
Calories 130 Calories from Fat 25
% Daily Value*
Total Fat 2.5g 4%
   Saturated Fat 1.5g 7%
   Trans Fat 0g 0%
Cholesterol 40mg 13%
Sodium 125mg 5%
Total Carbohydrate 22g 7%
Sugars 21g
Protein 5g

The primary listed sweetner is high fructose corn syrup, which is not an effective pwo insulin spiker when compared to dextrose, maltodextrin or even sucrose.

Based on the above, I would conclude that there are better pwo drinks.  If you're
drinking for taste and the holiday spirit, that's fine, but there surely are better post work out foods from an effectiveness standpoint.

I do enjoy it, especially with a shot of rum added.  I was interested in whether there was hope that something I enjoyed actually would be a good pwo option.  The facts didn't back up the claim unfortunately.

Sarcasm and tone is hard to get across here.  I was being sarcastic.
Sometimes I wonder if some of you take a half of a second to think about what you're saying/asking.

Eggnog

    * 6 eggs
    * 1 cup + 1 tablespoon sugar
    * 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    * 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    * 3/4 cup brandy
    * 1/3 cup dark rum (Captain Morgan for best flavor, but Myers is OK)
    * 2 cups whipping cream
    * 2 cups milk

All liquids should be very cold. Refrigerate in advance.

Beat the eggs for 2 or 3 minutes with an electric mixer at medium speed until very frothy. Gradually beat in the sugar, vanilla and nutmeg. Turn the mixer off and stir in the cold brandy, rum, whipping cream and milk Chill before serving. Sprinkle individual servings with more nutmeg.

Makes about 2-1/2 quarts.

Use any leftover to make French Toast in the morning  ;)
