so have any pros ever tried airbrushing darker and lighter tones of fake tan to make the cuts look deeper....or muscles look more shredded?

It wouldn't be hard to do, with a talented makeup artist and a couple hours.....

People do it with the Jan Tana spray tans. 
Its fairly obvious though. 

When Jan Tana first came out with the spray tan at the pro shows, and was doing the painting herself, she did some "etching." 
A few people were a bit overzealous with it though.  If you can find pics from those shows, you can see it.
