deadlifting 585 with straps, a belt and suit?  I  realize the weight is awesome for a natural and I commend him for that but this dude is fat and brags all the time about it.  Should I set him straight or not even bother?

You can't use them in standard powerlifting competitions.  They are sometimes allowed in strongman shows and you might find a promoter who runs a meet where an "odd lift" of the deadlift with straps are allowed.

The lift is good and you should just tell him good job or say nothing.

i agree with Chris here, straps and suit don't really do all that much on the deadlift, the deadlift is the one lift that isn't affected very much by accesories, 585 is damn good.

I admire the weight alot.  I am stuck at 500 without straps and do not compete at anything right now.  He def bothers me so when he does that with straps and brags to everyone it kind of bothers me, but then again bragging in general does.

I disagree here.  Straps play a very important part.  In allot of cases it is your grip that will go before your back.  Straps allow you to lift allot more than without.

entirely stupid question here... anyone ever just wrap a towel around the bar to help with the grip?

I'm flirting with 405 now on deadlift.  As I get there, My hands hurt the worst, but I really don't want to complicate things with straps, and my forearms need all the workout they can get.

So are there any commonly accepted (or uniquely effective) trianing aids between bare-hand and straps?

Nope, it's not always the case. I deadlift MORE without straps. The only reason I use straps is because of the injury risk with over-under grip. I deadlifted for 10 years without straps NEVER ONCE dropped the bar because my grip was failing.

I agree straps are important, I can deadlift about 500 pounds (230 kilos) with straps, no way I could do that without. Shameful really, as I'm a rugby player and my grip should be one of my strongest assets.

for a while, i stopped using straps and had bad tendinitis in my arms from gripping the bar sooo tight.

i think for 1 rep attempts, straps arent needed.

but for reps, straps would be a good idea.

I agree for a one rep dead straps are not that benifical but for high rep sets they come in handy.

585, straps or not, is a respectable lift.

For sure...I think bragging about it to everyone bugs me a bit.  That's probably why I posted it in the first place.  The guy tells everyone he has a herniated disc and still lifts that much and blah, blah, blah.  You know what I mean?

It actually BOTHERS you?  You don't have much of a life do ya?  Or at best, you sound like a kid that still lives with mommy and daddy if something like this truly BOTHERS you.  Wow, wait til you have to face the real world.  Rent or mortgage payments will really um....BOTHER YOU.

Go blow yourself dude.  I have seen guys bigger and in better shape lift more in everything and never brag but I have to constantly listen to this blowhard, that is what bothers me.  Make sense.  I make rent payments every month, live on my own.  Try again Old Cock.

Yeah, I hear ya and understand where you’re coming from. It’s much more respectable to do big lifts and just keep your mouth shut. That gets respect. When people keep talking like that, it cheapens it. It's like when some older fat guy asks you to spot him with his 225lb press, and goes on to talk about pushing 405 in high school, when he was the football star, etc etc.

Exactly.  I should have written the initial post about the bragging and not necesarily the lift.  I know another older guy who does the same thing and when he talks, the entire gym can hear about his lifts.  Believe me.

Also every older fat fuck that was once a strength god never does a full rep. These fuckers are the kings of 1/4 reps.

and they never rack the massive 225lb that they did for 3 very hard 1/4 reps

One of the loud old guys made a big deal about DB shoulder pressing the 75's today and the last time I was in for chest wanted a medal for inclining the 105's. Good weights for an older guy (40's) but you would think we were having a public service announcement about it.

That reminds me of those guys (typically the young punks trying to be the alpha male) that see a big guy over doing a moderate weight, like using the 65's for a dumbbell press. So the come over and grab the 80's and proceed to knock out a set like they are the shit. Little do they know you were just warming up and proceed to double your weight for the start of a pyramid set. Normally, they only stick around for a set or two as they know it only gets worse as your weight goes up. The scurry off like the wolf that just got his ass kicked by the pack leader.

IMO

lower back muscles are better structured to carry heavy weights, but not so much the forearms. I don't mind using straps, because theres no shame in playing it safe.

what i do is go up to about 3 plates and 25 on each side barehanded, then use straps afterward because the momentum starts to make the bar slip out of my hands around the 4th rep.

one thing to keep in mind is that deadlifting is a lower back exercise, so fuck the forearms. Straps or not, if you're doing full reps, it's all good.

One of my other favorites are the guys on the leg press and hack squat that really pile on the weight and do 1/4 reps and finish their set with a loud grunt and a sense of accomplishment.
