The guy who owned the gym I used to train at was a former Mr Australia, Greg Williams. That was the first time I'd seen a proper bodybuilder in the flesh. I was struck at how sunburnt and tight he looked, he looked really restricted in his movements. I also watched him train biceps one day and his form was shocking. After seeing him I was convinced that drugs + genetics were the keys to building a contest type physique.

SERGIO!!!!
Ugh, my retirement grease

Yeah, I also saw Sonny Schmidt. Also have seen Greg Kovacs, Matt McLean, and Luke Wood (pretty sure it was him). Didn't chat to any of these guys, though my dad chatted to Greg and asked him if he was coming back to Australia. Not sure what the answer was. Matt McLean guestposed at the expo I was at. Pretty average shape, but he was huge.

I was about 17 and the year was around 1967. I had been lifting hard for a couple years and was in awe of Sergio. On a family trip to Chicago I decided to go to the Duncan Y. and see how a "real' bodybuilder trained. I took a bus from the North side down to the street the Y was on, got off and walked through a hardcore ghetto about a mile to the gym. Once in the gym, I was both amazed and awestruck, I had never been in a top level gym before and quickly looked around for my hero, there he was, it had to be him, a HUGE, ripped Black guy. I couldn't believe how big he was. I watched him goof around for awhile and then heard some noise behind me, turned around, and there was the ACTUAL Sergio Oliva, twice as big as the first guy. I was thunderstruck. He lifted his sweatshirt to put on a belt and his waist was smaller than mine, unbelievable. Well, I stayed a couple of hours to see his training secrets and all he did was sleep on the incline board. I made the trip three days in a row and he barely trained. Oh well, it was still worth it..

The first professional bodybuilder I saw in person was Porter Cottrell.

It was 1992 and I was just 18 years old.

I was visiting a friend who lived in LA.

We made the trip down to Venice to see Gold's gym.

To my amazement....there was Porter Cottrell training back at Gold's.

We introduced ourselves and had a chat for a few minutes.

Very nice gent.
