well most wrestlers will have thick necks from doing bridges and neck exercises during wrestling, as far as tyson i read that he used to do shrugs and dips like everyday but i think its mainly from tensing the area all the time, if you want to build a larger thiccker neck do bridges

More specifically, keeping one's chin tucked in requires flexing the neck muscles.

Neck Bridges. You can get a head harness and try that also. When I played football, we actually had a machine mainly for our neck.

You can also get a 10-15lbs plate (whatever you can handle) put a towel around it, lay on a bench and work all four corners of your neck front, back and sides.

I still do bridges. Not nowhere as violent like this guy though http://youtube.com/watch?v=xZaAVpGzYqI

I wouldn't recommend Mike's movements ever or at least until you have developed KING neck strength like he obviously has/had.

gotta remember these guys worked years and years building their necks. you cant just pick up like mike tyson who's been doing that shit since he was a kid.

neck bridges is a potentially dangerous exercise, done wrong it put a lot of weight on the neck.

how thick the neck ends up being is mostly genetic anyway, but it sure can be built stronger. but it wont grow and get bigger as an arm for example.

A strong neck alows you to take harder hits since ur head dosnt fly around when u get hit, also it is important for controlling your oppnent on the ground and in the clinch. It also helps a lot for throws, yep smart fighters definitly train for neck stregth.

yeah like someone already mentioned, it helps to take better hits on your head, because your traps 'hold' your head in place more. It improves your assimilation of punches

I'm an amateur boxer and those neck muscles are really important.  After my first lost my neck was killing me b/c i was taking some pretty tough shots to the head.  Since then i've been training my neck more and it is easier to take shots.  With a strong neck your head won't sling back like its trying to escape your body, risking whiplash and a possible concussion after a strong uppercut or hook.

peace

yeah I think the head harness is the best way to safety train the neck, that and and wrestling and clinching sessions work well too Ideally against some one who can out power you.
