is this the Golden Age of the internet?
« on: January 20, 2007, 12:38:25 PM »
it seems to me, that with more and more attempts to regulate and limit what is said online(at least in america), threats of lawsuits, suing kids for music sharing, ect...that this right now is the best it will ever get.

one day we will look back to these very days and laugh and say, 'can you believe the shit we used to say/do on getbig?' because i dont see the absolute online freedom we've had for the past several years to go on for much longer.

The best thing would be to reform the US legal system to get rid of these stupid lawsuits.

 yeah, i think so.

congress is working on a bill (which passed unanonmously in pre-lims), which will require political bloggers whose audience is larger than 500 (would that include us also?) to register with the fed govt and be subject to all the laws, regulations, penalties as lobbyists.

also in Europe, china, and other nations, the govt limits what they can see and what they can do.

i'm sure it'll happen here eventually. they're already trying to build a 'per-page' fee but it hasn't flown yet.

Why? IMO it's because if any one piece of evidence came out (something about Iraq, iran, 911, someone getting a BJ, whatever) and it got on the blogs, there is effectively NO WAY the US govt can stop it now.  back in the day, if TV didnt play it, American didn't know it.  Well, today, even though they control the media on most things, they sure as hell can't stop an Alex Jones or the loose change kids form reaching ten million people in 5 minutes, and 30 mil in an hour.

So yeah, this is the golden age.  we're living in a good time. in 50 years, barring some great leap in technology to extend resources (which is always possible - could be nano tech), the world is gonna be a shitty place.

Think about the logistics of "internet control". Unless they can monitor every internet user, the gov. will have problems achieving the utopia you just described.

nah... in America, they'd just have to manage AOL, Comcast, Roadrunner, Sprint, and others thru regulations and our service would follow accordingly.

Google's close ties with the CIA are pretty well documented.  It wouldn't be hard for them to say "anyone who does x,y, or z starting tomorrow is committing a crime or helping the enemy" and then use google to compile a nice database of people to lock up.

Bush has already said he'll war with Iraq because he believes it's right, even if 99% of America is against it.  If he believed Internet control was "right", is there ANY doubt he'd institute it?

It's true!! Enjoy our right to argue here while we have it!

US government wants bloggers to register
Silent majority must become known

The Inquirer
Thursday, January 18, 2007

THE US GOVERNMENT is planning to force bloggers who criticise Congress and organise grassroot causes to register themselves or face jail time.
According to GrassrootsFreedom.com, under Section 220 of S. 1, the lobbying reform bill currently before the Senate, bloggers who have more than 500 readers will have to register and report quarterly to Congress just like lobbiests or go to jail.

GrassrootsFreedom.com chairman Richard Viguerie said the new law would create the most expansive intrusion on First Amendment rights ever.

The amendment was introduced by Senator David Vitter and is currently on hold as it seems to have got bogged down in the legislative process. It would be interesting to find a bog that is read by more than 500 people.

yeah, i love the web, but as I saw the % of people who believe the official 9/11 story dwindle from 99% to 16% in 5 years, I had a feeling they would be tightening things, and they are.

not much we can do but vote.

yep.  America isn't perfect, and there are some people in the place who are abusing things, but it's still the best place on earth and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!

this is the golden age and we will soon be crossing over...

right now the internet is fairly unregulated, but in the interest of information controll and more importantly $$ the government will attempt to lock it up in the same way its done with television and radio

If you believe this is the golden age of the internet then you haven't been watching what you could have seen on a network like courttv or CNBC. I am saying that because what is posted on different discussion threads on various internet sites(perhaps this one)is being monitored by whoever would feel threatened by opinions and gossip and the scuttlebutt that is said in many meaningful topics besides the obvious ones about big names in bodybuilding and the not so famous fitness females who are abmired by people who know them and DON'T KNOW THEM.

The golden age of the internet truly was when it was very unregulated in many different aspects of the .com world wide web as well as the .org & .net domain when the internet began to take off in the late nineties from 1997 to after the year 2000 up until the not long ago end of 2002. I can recall a number of important sites that have been revamped or are no longer in service because they were well kept and isolated until some anonymous people caught up to them.

Todays internet or future net is about recycled and repeated data in cyberspace specially with all the TALKING POINTS MEMO and the BLOGOSPHERE.

Based on what I said beforehand, try and understand why the Golden Age of the internet is and has been over for quite some time and don't get complacent as to why you might be taking you website chats and discussions for granted. I can honestly say that I believe that the early years of unregulated internet usage are times that will never be relived again. They can't be because the powers that be were literally inventing the internet very spontaneously and using it on a daily basis to see how news could be virtually covered in a online forum.

it was originally built to let DoD talk to each other in case a nuke attack left the phones and half the cities down.

commerce, porn, fun, and honesty kinda took over.

But those who started it still control it!

The internet was better back in 1995. When you did a search for porn you got private web pages which had cool pics and videos. Now all you get are commercial web sites who want to steal your cash.

This topic should not be forgotten because I'm surprised that someone had the thought of asking that question about the golden age of the internet.
