Who gives advice in the gym?
« on: January 24, 2007, 09:00:18 PM »
Just wondering how many people offer advice when they see someone making an arse of themselves in the gym?

I was in the gym yesterday and 2 guys came in.  One of them looked like he worked out regularly, his mate seemed to be a beginner.  They start with wide grip chins.  Only problem is, the first guy's chins were more like hanging kneee raises!  He flung his legs backwards then swung them up to give him enough momentum to just about lift his body 3 inches.  He did this for 8 shit reps!  Absolutely no back stimulation whatsoever!

Then they start overhead cable triceps extensions (I call 'em 'Rocky' extensions), but his mate can't lift the weight so ends up using a pullover movement instead, no elbow extension or triceps stimulation.

Finally, they go for seated incline db curls.  They pick up some 45lb'ers, get in position, the guy goes for his first rep, and the db's don't move, they're too heavy.  So instead of getting some lighter ones, he tells his mate to help.  So they both strain away and he gets bout 6 reps.  Then they swap places and do it again!

(Shit this posts getting big.)  Anyway, how many people see this kind of thing everytime they go to the gym?  And how many of you go over and give them advice?

No offense, dude, but you should be more worried about your own work outs and not sit there observing what everyone else is doing, especially to the extent that you memorize what size dumbbells they were using.  ::)

Yeah I do, but I train on my own and I usually see what other people are doing during my 2min rests.  I only knew they were 45lb'ers cos I'd been using them earlier.

It's kind of hard NOT to look at some of the fuckwads in the gym destroying their rotator cuffs. Gives me a chuckle every time. :)

I'm like that, I'll say something if they're gonna do some damage.  There were some kids messing about on the hack squat once who nearly got stuck under the plate.

My point is though, that some people can't take advice, they just look at you like you're stupid.

At least if they hurt themselves, they may not be back for a while. As you said some people cant take well meaning advice when its offered to them.

I think most guys would actually be offended if a stranger came over and told them they were wrong.

Indeed.  But to obsess about it to the point of memorizing what weights they used, and then let it fester on the ride home from the gym, and then log on to getbig and compose a thread in honor of said internal fury...  To what end, I prithee, is such idiocy?

People ask for advice, I throw them some suggestions...I remember when I used to be all energetic in helping people when they wanted exercises and nutrition advice, gets old though.

A few times I have seen some dumb ass old dudes try to give advice to the hot young chica's but they don't know what the fuck they are talking about so since I am a gym employee I quickly head over and instruct the girl how to do it correctly and say if you ever have any other questions I am here all day so feel free to ask.

If you do it, make sure you start with a complimant:

"Hey man, I don't usually see people deadlifting, that's some good weight, let me show you a different way to do it that might help you get up 50 more pounds"

I learned that from AA....
