My Tarantula escaped last night: Pictures and Story inside
« on: January 28, 2007, 06:44:02 AM »
Well that was cool ;D.
I had the nightshift and forgot my Cell at home, my gf was very tired and feel asleep on the couch, when she woke up she saw my petspider Nina a Mexican redknee (completely harmless) happily wandering on the wall enjoying her new found freedom.
My GF is has nothing against spiders, but this was the absolute limit for her, especially since she could not call me.

So I came home and missed the note on my GF wrote me NOT to open the living room door, so I walked in the apartment, and my GF started screaming: DONT OPEN THE FRIGGEN DOOR TO THE LIVINGROOM NINA IS OUT !!!! ;D

So I walked in and saw her on the wall took some pictures and put her in a smaller plastic tank were she will stay until I have the bigger one fixed.

As you can see from the attached pictures, this is a fishtank and there are 2 holes on the back and I have was not carfull enough to block access to the outside world :) and she squeezed through.

She is pretty harmless, like most spiders of that size (with exceptions of course).
She was a little bit pissed off when I took her down and kicked hairs at me, but in general she would avoid anything that shows to be bigger than her and is obviously not worth hunting for.
Ill bet you she was just looking around if I was hiding some crickets from her, in fact she probably was hungry and decided its time to hunt down a few crickets and anything that is unfortunate enough crossing her way ;D

They can climb so well, if you look very close to their feet you can see that they have small hooks, <---------- These are the sex not used to hang on the wall but they are similar just smaller much smaller.
They are seriously harmless and very different to the common spiders you can see on a daily basis, these are basically Dinosaurs and have (not like any other spiders) evolved over millions of years, that's why they are so big (one of the reasons)...
They also have character, I'm serious, none of them are are the same, some are chilled and don't mind even been picked up on the side and turned around to sex them, others freak out and bite you, some others are in the middle and can have a bad day... It's hard to understand for somebody who has never seen them or lived with them, but they are not like spiders... at least not like their smaller cousins.

Dont be too surprised if your spider dies in the next little while; they are very sensitive to stress and being in the open, when they have been born and raised in a cage, is very stressful experience for them.

uh I like to disagree with you here:

First I have spiders for like 9 years, this particular one for the past 5 years, I raised her from a spiderling to the size she is.
Spiders don't just die, and they are not sensitive to stress, and lol deffiantly not beeing in the open ::).

Sorry to say but you seriously have no idea what you are talking about :(
yes they don't like to be touched and it is stress for them, but they don't just die, thats the whole secret why spiders are still around, they are one of the toughest animals around, did you know you can take a T put her in a Tank put her under your bed and leave her there for 1/2 year (if she has enough water) she will be fine.

Anyways:
For some Nina may seem big, but watch this beauty, it's a Teraposa Blondi also know as Goliath or simply Blondi, these are the biggest spiders around, they are relativly harmless only bite if they absolutly have to or if you piss them off, they have a tendecy to overeat and are than of course in danger (when falling) to seriously hurt themself, they have also nasty litte hairs on their back and if you hold them you will have an itch for a couple of days... they can also hiss ;) what is strange the first time you hear it.
I held one of these babys on my hand and she decided for what ever reason to run up my shoulder and sat on my back, that was the first time I was close loosing my nerves, she was so heavy you can acctually feel her through your T-Shirt.

I hate spiders, at least the smaller ones. The bigger ones, like posted above, I don't mind, but I still get creeped out when I'm in the same room as them. Cage or not. And no, I wouldn't hold one of those things unless I was either on "Fear Factor" or had no other choice!

Awesome spider... the colors are great. I've never see one as big as that goliath  :o

My first (and last) tarantula was a chilean rose hair. Absolutley harmless and easy to keep.

You're dead right about them being robust.. My baby was from somewhere in the tropics but survived a freezing Tokyo winter and three weeks without food while I went on holidays!!

Here are a couple of pics from when she molted..

So what is the most aggressive Spider then?

Is there not a Bird eating Spider that actively seeks a conflict or is that BS?

Looks awesome, you have a good tank too, not to big... what happend to her?

The most aggressive Spider is the Mustard... a friend of mind has one and has written the following on his webpage....

This is the most aggressive tarantula I ever owned. I consider this to be the Pit Bull of tarantulas. It would frequently throw itself against the side of its tank when it detected my presence and made a very distinct hissing noise (hence I gave it the name of Hissing Sid). Should most definitely NOT be handled. Not for the beginner!   :o :o :o

AWESOME!!!!!!

Tag you a couple of times, and move back, don't forget most T's have a venom not stronger than a bee or wasp (Pokies, who life in the trees of Pakistan and India have sometimes a little stronger venom), it's the fangs that hurt like a mother... I know I have been tagged a couple of times, it's like being electrocuted.

Yes the hairs are irritating but nothing to really worry about.

Sydney funnel web uhhh...dude you cannot hold them, these are the most aggressive and most venouus spiders on this planet, you could die from a bite by a female Funnelweb in less than 15 min. (they are not in the same family as the Tarantulas)
And here is another cool thing about them: They bite and don't let go ;D they are so aggressive they tag you and just keep on biting and pumping venom in you ;D

Here are some pictures... if you ever come across a large spider and she stands like this, keep away, this is Defcon 1, you touch any spider that does this posture and you get bitten ;D

You know I don't know what is worse this big ass thing or the little one.  I mean at least I can see this one.  The one that bit me is about the size of a dime or so.  I have held tarantulas before.  They are pretty harmless.  I would hate to get bit by one though.  They got fangs and shit.  The funnel spider in Australia is the real bad boy though
