Have you seen the contracts people are getting? Jd's contract is fair for a guy with Drew's capabilities/potentail in this offseason market. The red sox took 50 days to come to term with a contract for Drew. Top medical specialist in the world looked at the guy. We do have a few of the best hospitals in the world here ya know. Rest assured they would not give him the cash, or take over 50 days to make it concrete if they thought he wasent worth it.

The language in Drews contract was restructured after he was checked out by the sox medical teams. The  new language  protects the Sox from several situations you broadly hinted to in your post . There are several contingency clauses that protect the red sox if Drew is injured or does not play a certain amount of games. There are a bunch actually. Hence, the deal taking 50 days to get done. With the way free agency is, and JD's stats of course the sox would sign him. To hit behind Ramirez and Papi?  Not to mention the guy is a great right fielder who can also back up coco in center if needed. Big time defensive upgrade over Nixon.

Funny thing is, if Drew improves on his time played ( which he will) he is going to be a major upgrade over Trot Nixon. Trots play has really started to wane in recent years.  Btw, the most games Trot has ever played was 152 , in 2002. Trot played 114 games last year. So either way, it is a significant upgrade. Nixon has actually played less, in the last three years then Drew. Trot played 43 games in 2004 when we won it all. Jd played 145. With the  sharp decline of Nixon, and the current free agent market, it was a good move. I have listened to Drew a lot and think he is 100 percent sincere about embarking on a conditioning program layed out by the sox to help him stay healthy for real. Something he admitted he never utalized with his previous teams. Different ball game out here, people wont put up with crap. If you know a better right field free agent to replace Trot Nixon in this market, let us know!

What team are you a fan of?

That's cool, market is a lil dif here. He would prob get shot if he pulled some bullshit, lol. Not to mention lose mad doe due to all the clauses in his contract. If you check out the contract there are clauses that protect the sox from certain injury scenarios, and also if Drew does not play a certain numbers of games due to certain reasons etc etc. Either way, there was really no better choice to upgrade/replace Nixon. He is a great player. Guess we will just have to see how he takes to the new atmosphere. No offense to the dodgers, but I think hitting after guys like Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz will push him. I think it was a good pick up for the sox with the decline/departure of Trot Nixon. He is a obvious offensive upgrade and a huge defensive upgrade with the versatility to play center if need be.

I def understand where you are coming from tho.

I know that for a fact. He aint the big fish in Boston. Like he thought he was in LA. He has to play 3rd fiddle to the guys boston has there...and for the record boston is my second favorite team because of my extreme hatred for the NY skanks

The way i see it is...he and Penny are gonna fight for that ace spot. I like lowes upside.Last year he goes like 16 and 8 i think maybe 9. And thats without stellar run support. I like him a bit more. He is proven but penny is said to have  a lot of potential. A bit inconsistant for me though.

thanks for the insight. drew's contract is outrageous IMO, but so are alot of others. if anyone can afford to pay someone who is an injury risk it's the Red Sox (or the Yankees)

my favorite free agent signing...gary mathews jr has one good season and gets 50mil. WTF? that one totally blew me away.

for the record i'm a reds fan. i'd like to just forget the past 15 years and go back to 1990.

bring back Jose Rijo, Chris Sabo, Barry Larkin and the original Mr. can't play 150 games in a season (and one of my all time faves) Eric Davis

I agree with you 100 percent. The only reason I defend the deal, is because of the outrageous money everyone is getting. Also the need they had when Nixon's contract was up. To Jd's credit he is a great player, and an upgrade over Nixon. If it was not for the restructured contract, and protection clauses I would be against the deal. With the amount of money being thrown around, any major league team can expect to pay out the nose for a good player. Look how much Zito got. Can you imagine how much Santana is going to get when he is a free agent? At least 21 mill a year, his stuff is 3 times better then Zito who is getting 18. Jd's bat will help make a historically  potent offense, that much better. Am I scared of the risk? Of course, but it was one we had to make. I feel confident they evaluated him competently. JD def was overpayed, but who isn't these days?

Now, lets talk about giving  us Arroro back ;)

Husker, just heard about the extension Arroyo got today. Speaking of  contracts, 2 years 25 million, with a option!!!!! 33 million when including his buyout! That is some big green for a guy like Arroyo. I heard Arroyo was pretty vocal in the media about coming back to Boston after his two years where up? Guess the reds stamped that out! That is proof of the type contracts people are getting these days. It was a good move tho, Arroyo has a rubber arm.
