How big is your monitor?
« on: February 06, 2007, 05:23:28 PM »
How big is your monitor?  I’m (ebay) bidding on a new 24” flat screen.  Can’t believe I’ve been using a 19” CRT all these years.  :-[

Be careful when buying an LCD from a less than trusted source. Dead pixels in the wrong place can ruin the experience and if the retailer you bought from doesn't have a dead pixel policy things could get sticky.

Also, make sure your graphics card can handle the native resolution of your new screen.

All good counsel.  I balked at refurbished models for that very reason.  I want a brand new unit that comes with a warranty.

If it's the Dell 2407FPW that you're bidding on, nice monitor and good luck with it.

I bought a widescreen LCD monitor about 6 months ago and I have no idea how I ever lived without one. Now when I use a 4:3 monitor it feels strange.

I originally wanted the HP L2335  http://reviews.cnet.com/HP_L2335/4505-3174_7-30788118.html
but brand new ones are hard to come buy.  I did find one the other day and placed an order but the vendor had a problem (I won’t go into) so I cancelled the order.

So now I’m looking at the Dell Ultra Sharp.  It’s not as good as the HP but it’s almost half the price!

Have you looked at the Samsung 244-T, beautiful monitor or the HP LP2465?

Yes.

The good: Bright, crisp image; incredible contrast ratio; stable and flexible stand; fast pixel-response time; all the cables you'll need are included; three-year warranty.

The bad: Limited video connections underscore the point that this is an office display, despite its large size;no media card reader; DVD playback is blurry at times.

For the money it is not the best value.  :(

I prefer Samsung first and then Dell. I mentioned the HP because you were looking at their 23" display.

I see you're using Cnet for your reviews, good choice. I always use reviews from owners as a gauge as well before I buy.

The Samsung was highly rated by consumers (less so by Cnet editors).

The good: Fine image quality and color accuracy; highly adjustable; HDTV-ready; includes picture-in-picture; offers many image- and color-quality adjustments; features digital and analog ports, as well as inputs for S-Video, component video, and composite video.

The bad: Expensive; poor DVD-playback quality.

The bottom line: The wide-screen Samsung SyncMaster 244T delivers good color accuracy, but you can find better monitors for the money.

I was outbid.  :'(

No hurry.  I’ll try again tomorrow.   I’d buy a new desktop too, but I’m waiting for Mac OS 10.5.

I use my 50" LCD projection at home and a little 20" widescreen monitor at work.

Get a high def. 1080p tv. It is cheaper than a monitor and you can get a 50" LCD for around $1700.

The bonus is speakers and a single set-up depending on your house.

I’ve thought of that… in fact, the way this room is set up, I could use the monitor as a TV… if it had that functionality… but I’d be alternately using the monitor up close and watching the TV/monitor from across the room.  What widescreen monitors have displays and resolutions that are good for this kind of dual use?  Can you name three that I can research?  I'm thinking... Sony?

I use a Sony, I also like Panosonics and some Toshibas. The big thing is make sure it is 1080p, 1080i will give you quite a bit of flicker as the refresh rates aren't fast enough.
I use 720p for that reason since my TV isn't a 1080p model.
I also have a separate small monitor that I use when I am using my computer for work, so I kind of cheat. I connect the TV through the DVI connection and the monitor through the VGA connection. To switch back and forth is only a click. I also use a wireless keyboard so I only have to move my keyboard around.

What Sony do you have?  Does it offer picture in picture mode & USB ports?

You could also just buy a tuner card and turn your computer into a media center, with a HD antenna you could even pick up local Hi Def. channels. While using your tv for a computer monitor is great for certain things I find it annoying for other things like text documents and excel files.

My TV is a Sony KF50WE620 rear projection LCD. I absolutely love the picture and it is great for playing HD content.
It is an older set though I purchased it in 2003.

There are no USB ports on the TV, but my work around was to buy a USB Hub that allows the connects for up to 7 USB devices at the same time. It was cheap around $50.

I agree with some of this working on Documents is an inconvience.
But movies and games are way better.

A media center is ok for certain things as well, but you can't surf, or at least I haven't seen any products that connects to the internet and you can't play your computer games through media center. Media centers are good for streaming video content though, but you might be limited to WMV movies and other oddities as well.

I'm not so sure you and I are talking about the same thing, I'm not talking about an HTPC. Are you familiar with internal tuner cards? They turn your computer into a television. You can do everything you could always do on the computer just add the ability to watch television.

So you could watch ESPN and surf the web at the same time. Or watch Food TV and work on a Word file at the same time.

I'm a big proponent of the Samsung HL-S series of DLP. My favorite being the HL-S6188W, as far as bang for the buck goes it simply can't be beat. They also make the HL-S6187W which is about $500 cheaper but it lacks PIP/POP, a QAM tuner, Firewire and USB ports.

You're right about movies and games on a large screen 1080p television being better. Although there are certain monitors whose native resolution can go higher than 1920 x 1080 so the picture could be crisper and in turn better on certain intensive pc games.

I'd prefer the 22" over the dual setup. I'm not a big fan of dual monitors plus you'd need a dual DVI graphics card to connect them both digitally.

The interesting thing is that you can buy two decent 19" LCD's for about the same price as one 22" LCD.
