any hockey fans here?

i am and have been a huge hockey fans since i was a little runt. i grew up watching the Oilers in their hayday.

what a friggin disapointment they are this year

after last nights loss to vancouver im saying theyre done. no playoffs....unless about 4 teams ahead of us crumble the rest of the season worse than we do.

i agree with 30 teams now its exactly what you said...watered down.
even if they cut it down to say 24 it would improve things.

Not to mention, the physicality of the game is non existant. I'm not talking about fighting either. Just in general.

When the nhl instituted new rules to try and appease the "new" fane base they thought they had, they alienated the hockey purists ( guys like you) That knew the game when it was great. Bad move.

I grew up a Bruins fan, but I really started to appreciate hockey in college. I had a few friends who played for BU. I also went to school there, so as you can imagine hockey was a big part of my collegiate experience. College hockey is huge around here. A lot of the top hockey teams in the nation are from NE schools, so from a young age everyone plays hockey. UNH is number one this year. BU and BC ( surprise, surprise) will play in the beanpot next week, I plan to go. Now I want to play pond hockey!

i hate the schedule and how erratic the penalties are called.

but i still love hockey. especially when you've got Roberto Luongo and the Sedins to cheer for.

if you see Rafi Torres today make sure and thank him for the 2 points last night. i can't remember seeing someone take TWO stupid penalties like that in one game like he did.

dont even get me started on fuckin torres

that fucher cost us that game and probably a chance at the playoffs. that might have sealed the deal in him leaving oil country .

but what about that hit from stortini on krajeck(sp?).

one of the hardest ive seen in a long time.

yes i hate both the schedule and the refereeing the past couple years.
the schedule sucks. they need to change it so each conference plays more cross over games with the other...at least 2 with each team a year

and the refing is so inconsistant you never know what is a penalty and what isnt anymore( not to mention the refs hate us

)
but i do like the changes that made the game faster and more open. i hated all that clutching and grabbing shit.

the nhl is the only league to award a franchise back to a city who had already lost a franchise due to fan apathy...(atlanta flames)...that's the mindset of the nhl..expand to areas where teams can't draw flies--water the product down, then change rules--debate on making the net larger is the dumbest thing to ever come down the pike, institute a shootout to decide games (maybe the next dumbest thing that the nhl did) eliminate and alienate the purist hockey fan was all the nhl did...oh yeah..and allowing the north stars to move to dallas leaving the biggest hotbed of hockey without a team for 10 years ranks up there as one of the worst moves under bettman's reign..the fact that this still has a job after 14 years is amazing to me..

i gotta agree with alot of what you said.
there has been a few cities to get teams back after they moved.....atlanta, minnesota,colorado. and ya it doesnt really make sense. why give a city a team back after it failed once?

i said before that 30 teams is too many and it has hurt the game. by having so many teams, each one has fewer great players(watered down). no salary cap or revenue sharing for years made it worse. this made coaches rethink their methods on how to win..which brought in the trap and completely slowed down the game making some games extremely boring. this is where all the rule changes(and proposed changes ie. larger nets) came from. to try and make the game more exciting again by increasing the speed of the game and scoring.
so basically theyre screwing with the game to make it better...which needed to be fixed because they fowled it up to begin with(too many teams and no salary cap/revenue sharing). $:-\$

bettman sucks period. hes done more harm than good to the game

right now i would say its crosby + ovechkin. give malkin a year or 2 more and he'll be incredible too.

plus gretzky and lemieux never played os the same team like crosby/malkin so you cant make that comparison

Minnesota too. Hockey plays in towns nobody even heard of. Edmenton, Winnipeg, Columbus etc..

i'm ok with giving minnesota a mulligan...but the rest of these cities you can forget...nashville? i read that even though they are one of the best teams in the league corporate sponsorship can give a rat's ass about the team--and they drew 12000 fans to a ducks-preds game--the two best in the league...atlanta--still can't draw fans--columbus?! who in the world picked that city? you have a team in columbus and not one in quebec?

the fact is..that when the teams left canada it wasn't because of lack of fan support it was because the owners wanted newer more expensive arenas and the tax payers to foot the bill..and the canadian fans said f**k off...i don't blame them...

it's sad because in the 80's and early 90's there wasn't a sport out there that matched hockey's intensity, action, and skill...they've fucked with the game..bettman turned the nhl into his little NBA project---stupid promotions, seven different uniforms, silly ass skills competitions, etc...you can go on all day about how bad of a job this guy has done...

Blinky, how can you compare towns like Edmenton and Winnipeg to the above cities? Those are just little dinky places not real cities. Come on man. Another thing: hockey will never amount to anything in the southern and western USA. Who the hell plays hockey in places where they have never even seen a frozen over pond?

the sad thing about the leaugue is that when they pick cities for expansion they are only worried about who can pay $ and who can have a good sized arena to play in. they dont give a shit about if that city has fans that want to go to the games. the places you mentioned above are great examples of that. some of them are having an incredible season yet the seats arent even close to full..........cause people in those cities dont care about hockey.
if they were even remotely as concerned about the fans and the game... as the almighty $ they would put teams back in winnipeg and quebec city up here in canada where people would kill to go to games again. sure they're no-name cities to you people in the US but they are die-hard hockey towns.

True, but pro sports unfortunately are all about how much money the owners can suck out of people. Hockey belongs in Canada, , Chicago, Boston, Detroit, New York. I think that it is a niche sport as great a game as it is. The food network reruns get better ratings than the NHL allstar game in the USA.

the NHL allstar game is a joke..pretty much always has been. everybody is afraid to hit or do anything physical.
