Interesting.  I don't know about this one.  Is this the government's role?  What if the parents showed their kid an "educational" clip of a married couple having sex as part of her "sex education"?

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  —  A Woonsocket mother and her boyfriend are headed to trial on charges they had intercourse in front of the woman's 9-year-old daughter as a way to teach the girl about sex.

Rebecca Arnold, of Woonsocket, and her boyfriend, David Prata, have pleaded not guilty to felony child-neglect charges. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for next month.

When questioned by an investigator from the state Department of Children, Youth and Families, Prata, 33, said he and Arnold, 36, had sex "all the time" in front of the child and that "we don't believe in hiding anything."

He said the girl would often be on the bed watching as the couple had sex. Though they did not ask her to leave, they also did not force her to remain on the bed, Prata said.

Asked why he thought a child that age should know about sexual acts, Prata replied, "We wanted to prepare her so she would know how," according to a report from the investigator, Vanessa E. Cisela.
 
The girl, who is now 11, went to live with her biological father in North Adams, Mass., after spending the summer with her mother in Woonsocket.

Her teacher called the Child Abuse Hotline in December 2004 to report that the girl said her mother and her boyfriend had sex in front of her.

The child told a Massachusetts social services investigator that her mother and Prata never touched her or tried to include her in the sex.

Woonsocket police arrested Prata and Arnold in February 2005. The couple is accused of "providing an environment that is lewd and depraved in a manner that makes their home unfit for the child to live in," according to court records.

Prata and Arnold are free on bail pending a March 19 pretrial conference in Family Court. They each face one to three years in prison or a maximum $1,000 fine, or both.

Their lawyers did not return phone calls from The Providence Journal.

I agree with in-depth sex education by the partent for the child. But I can't fathom that it needs to actually go to carrying out the act in from of the kid... Ah... no... Hell NO...  I think definitely not...

I agree with in-depth sex education by the partent for the child. But I can't fathom that it needs to actually go to carrying out the act in from of the kid... Ah... no... Hell NO...  I think definitely not...

I'd never do it either.  My wife and I just had the "birds and bees" talk with my son a little while back.  (Well, I did all the talking.)  Complete with pictures, books, etc.  Of the educational variety.  But what if I decided to show him a few clips?  Although I disagree with getting your freak on in front of the kids, I question whether the government should be involved in that decision.

Quite probably true, ...but I doubt the scarring will be as a result of anything her mother did,
but rather as a result of the actions of the state.

I admit her mother's approve is a little ...um ... extreme for want of a better word, but child abuse?

But then again Mass. was the same state that charged a sailor with lewdness and indecency for kissing his wife on the dock after having been away at sea for 2 yrs.

Damn, I've been deprived!    I can only imagine how much better I'd be in the sack if only I would have had the benefit of watching my parents as a child.  Maybe I should have my father come over and watch me now, as a kind of a "review."  At any rate, wouldn't be any less disgusting.

I wonder, if that wasn't her mother and boyfriend, whether they would have been charged with pedophilia.

I don't think there would be anything wrong with showing your kid a few clips of intercourse.  Not porno stuff but something just cut in dry.  as long as it was in context of the educational session.  I wouldn't go popping in a dvd of Jenna Jamerson   But I don't think it would be needed anyway.  As long as the kid has an understanding of what the hormones are about to do to them and what he/she is about to feel is normal and what the purpose of it is.  I don't see needing video to get the understanding placed.
