exactly. if you want to look at this entire issue from a political slant, the luke got the equivalent of a very strong check (to add chess), though not quite checkmate.
you can't prove a negative, so there's no way to explicitly prove there ISN'T a letter. however, due to the nature of the story, he can claim legal reasons he can't reveal it. thus if anyone denies it, ron or whoever else, he can go back to the argument that ron especially is legally prevented from admitting there is a letter and that he's "said too much".
and knowing that other mods dislike the squad as well (such as, say, mindspin; remember the whole thing started up during MS's battle with sarcasm), he knew that some would take the "well i can't say there ISN'T a letter, wink wink..." approach in order to perpetuate the myth that there is one but they're not allowed to talk about it.
