I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to get the best lighting when taking pictures of yourself. For instance, is it better to pose in a dark room and use the flash or a bright room with no flash?

More important is lighting direction. Light should come mainly from the side to bring out shadows and show off muscle cuts.
Wonder if Alex Ardenti and some of the other professional physique photographers that post on this site can offer some expert tips on taking physique photos.

Posing in your kitchen tends to be a popular spot.
