Weight gain is driving me insane
« on: February 16, 2007, 07:00:50 PM »
I am 87.8 kg (193 lb's)  6 foot , 12% bodyfat

I am training once a week with a pull/push routine and doing 2 - 3 hour field hockey fitness,games and skills sessions 3 + times a week.

My calories are 2000 per day (which in every opinion ive seen on bmr's and rmr's is way too low etc)

I have a cheat meal and dessert once a week on sundays.

I am consisitently going up in weight every week since I started hardcore running and hockey

Want to be 82 kg max and single digit bodyfat so im lean , light and strong for hockey.

What the problem is how the hell is my weight going up on 2000 cal's per day and the amount of exercise im doing  ???  ???  ???

Do i really have to eat less than 2000 cals? Obviously I do but can someones metabolism really be that slow conisdering that my lbm isnt exactly puny etc.

Any light on the topic much appreciated.

i have had problems like this in the past. this is how i solved it:

6 small meals per day.

oatmeal as my carbohydrates (meal 1....or if ur eating carbs twice meal 1 and 2 or 3)

high protien (eg- small serve of meat/chicken in every meal or use protien powder to make it more convenient)

no sugars (except for after work out with protien shake [all other times shakes are in cold water...)

eating clean the whole time (except one or two nibblies during the week - eg- a sausage on weekend or a handful of fries if someone is having some for dinner)

thermogenic helps, make ur own (see my other topic) eg - green tea, aspirin, caffiene, synephrine - this also reduces apettite alot more than things like hydroxycut because of the ratios i use it is more effective and somewhat cheaper)

cardio 6 times per week, when high bodyfat i even sometimes do 12-18 hours (walking) only for three weeks if i  drastically wanna lose some fat...but note that i dont lower my food intake during this time so that i lose less muscle....

another problem could be ur high intensity exercise burns more muscle and carbs for energy than walking does (which for me, walking really gets rid of 'fat' purely)..also weight training helps alot in fat loss and makes ur body look better

Cry me a river Tier!  Are you a Maori?  Maybe running and hockey are boosting your T?

Keep off the Adonis foods.

You're sure you're 12%?  The teen%s can look alike.  Did you have your cals even lower than 2000 before?  Might have slowed your metabolism.

Honestly, how's the drinking?  I've yet to meet a kiwi who didn't like a beer or 10.  Always knew it was time to call a taxi when this one guy would start ordering zambuka shots for everyone.   ;D

I'm no expert here.  Where's Princess L when we need her?

If your t3 has dropped from very low cals, I'd guess frequent feeds with no less than 50% carbs, maybe more like 60%, to let your body know it's ok to burn rather than store.  Of course, if you're making quality gains, quit complaining!   ;)  I like intense cardio, but bad things happened to me when I went too low on carbs - never again.

If you suspect your metabolism has slowed, probably a good idea to take your best aim at maintenance cals and 4x cardio for a few weeks before doing any carb cycling.  Don't do anything extreme and your body won't put up extreme defences.  IMHO.

yeah true , apparently my maintenence is ment to be around 3000 cal's  :o , doing that isnt going to stop my weight gain  ;D

think ill just stick with the 50/30/20 diet at 2000 cals and hopefully my bod will eventually adjust with the aditional exercise/muscle and get leaner over time.......

if u eat low cals but 6 times a day....eg- about 2000 - 2500 cals. while workin out 3 times per week and cardio 5-6 times per week (one hour walk each session)

can ur metabolism still slow down?

Ya Tier, I didn't mean the maintenance cals that the "formula" tells you, I meant whatever you think your current maintenance cals are given your situation.  Frequent feeding and low gi carbs to keep steady insulin levels got me back on track ok after a few weeks.

DL5, if you're losing more than a couple of pounds/week and your macros are the same (not cycled) then I think your body will either shed muscle or slow down or both.  That's been my unfortunate experience anyway.  Slow and steady wins it.

With your kind of workout schedule, I'd look into carb cycling.
