Trained at Gold's Venice today...Mark Dugdale, Ahmad Haidar, and Rusty Jeffers were there doing photo shoots. I got a chance to meet Rusty, and speak with him for a bit. Told him that the Ironman was the 2nd time he was royally screwed by the IFBB, but that I hope he sticks around, because he is good for bodybuilding, and as far as I am concerned he is the "People's Champ."

He was a pretty cool guy.....seemed quite humble about everything...mentioned that he thinks the problem is that the judges are looking for more extreme conditioning out of the atheletes these days...(I.E. siriations in the glutes). It was a pleasure getting a chance to meet him.

The tragedy didnt happen untill later....after my workout the camera crew starting loading up their equipment into some trucks. .....and there it was....the mythical 180 pound dumbell.... Yes, yes....we all hear about the stories of fake weights, but in the back of my mind, I always hoped that they would be nothing more than lies, and slander. Well they stepped back inside the building....when I decided that I just had to know the truth....

The mystique is shattered....that thing couldnt have been heavier then 20 pounds.... They also had some 45's on the back of their bed truck...that didnt weigh anything near 45....:(

So there you have it....chalk it up to another myth busted... Santa Claws, Jesus, O.J. Simpson's innocence, and stories of David Henry's 80 pound dumbell kickbacks.....

Perhaps it is better to buy the lie.....

I'm pretty sure most people realized they were fake, but it's good to have some definitive evidence. Good work

Thanks....It was my duty to the public to get to the bottom of this...;)

That being said....I wonder how stupid a pro would have to feel lifting that shit and acting like it really was 180 pounds. To make matters worse...sometimes when you read the magazine spreads...the pro's will comment on the lifts and make ludicris statments like "Yeah...im only doing dumbell presses with 160 in this shoot...cause I was depleated...but normally I do them with 200 for 37 reps with a perfect range of motion....after 60 warm up sets, and my nitro-tech/gakic shake gets a chance to digest.....

sigh.... :-\

We all like Rusty but he did not get screwed at the ironman...He came in way to soft and small compared to what he was up against...Then add in the fact that his posing music sucked ass and Rusty ended up where most of us knew he would end up

I want to let you guys know that I would never shoot a wokout with fake dumbells. That totally takes away the stigma of hardcore bodybuilding. A photographers job is to capture the "real time" hardcore essance. BTW This is just my opinion.

Yeah...im sorry about the lack of pictures guys....though It wouldnt have been that impressive as the dumbell looks just like the real thing....hmm...unless I balanced it on my head or something...or took a picture of me doing arm curls with it....

As far as Rusty goes....yes he still got screwed IMO...not as bad as the Masters...and im not saying he should have been in the top 5....but his presentation and symmetry alone should have him leagues ahead of where he placed....most pros today cant pose for shit.... look at Silvio Samuel...yes he looked like shredded wheat, but he posed like a rank novice....seriously at what point do we draw the line? Should having a ripped ass mean more then presentation, calves, lack of distension? Rusty can still hit a vaccum! Who else can do that right now....

I shouldnt bitch too much though...at least Dugdale got 2nd...so I suppose there is some hope left....

Let's see...

fake tans
fake breasts (female BB)
fake heterosexuality
fake muscles (synthol/implants)
more fake muslces (photoshop magazine covers)
is it any wonder that fake weights would be tossed around during photoshoots.

This sport is all about illusion and vanity.  :-\

I think the usage of fake plates and dumbbells shot up after the Jean Pierre Fux accident. Not to say it wasn't there before.

For the longest time, I had no idea. There were signs, odds things....my issue is with this whole shit industry as a whole. It's starts with the lying magazines, then it goes to the supplement companies, and then to the competitor's themselves. It's a huge bag of shit. Everyone within it, just winks their eye at each other, and pretend nothing is going on...

It’s not so much sad as just plain silly.  About as silly as caring or arguing about the lifts or measurements of someone you do not know, will likely never meet, and whose lifts & measurements (real or otherwise) will have absolutely zero impact on your life.  In other words, they lie about that stuff because you guys actually seem to care.  ::)

You still don't get it do you?  ???
Bodybuilding is all an illusion designed to prey on your insecurities and sell you products (supplements, gym memberships, etc.) that will separate you from your money and enrich the vendor.  It is not about fitness, health, athleticism, strength, or anything else.  If you are interested in strength there is a sport for that; it's called powerlifting--not bodybuilding.

When I was a kid, they used to run this ad in comic books.  It’s called “antidote advertising.”  They convince you that you have a problem (you don't have big muscles and therefore are not a real man) and (surprise!) they have the solution (antidote) which you can purchase for three easy payments of blah blah blah!  Falling for this when you’re 10 makes sense… but by the time you reach 18 you should know better.  ::)

I think all of us drew to bodybuilding for various insecurities. Not just training with weights sporadically, or for improved performance in a sport, but anyone that has seriously presued bodybuilding, has had some issues with needing to be vindicated on a deeper level. I can include myself in this list, and I'm sure if most of the people on this board were honest about it, they too would admit this.
